19th of January, community representatives and supporters held a press conference where community representatives detail plans to take over Rondebosch Commons.

What are we doing? On the 27th of January, early in the morning, we will wake up and walk. We will walk very far. From our communities in Mitchell’s Plain, in Khayelitsha, in Bishop Lavis, in Manenberg, and many others, we will walk to Athlone Stadium. From there, at about 2pm, we will march together to Rondebosch Common.

From that evening, the 27th, until the 29th of January, our communities and supporters from all over Cape Town, will take back Rondebosch Commons from the rich dog walkers to hold a People’s Land! Housing! and Jobs! Summit. We will discuss our struggles, talk about alternative ways we can live and decide on actions that will take us forward in our struggle. I read an article in the People’s Post today about an intended march from Athlone Stadium with thousands of residents to the Rondebosch Common. I quote Mario Wanza the organiser “The occupation of the Rondebosch Common is symbolic of all spaces in affluent areas which are under utilized while “People on the Cape Flats don’t have a space to move”. The City says this event at The Common is illegal. A meeting was apparently set up between the two and the group was 15 minutes late so the panel assumed they were not coming.

My understanding is that particapants from all over the Cape Flats will be marching and it seems as if the first group will start at 7am at Rocklands’ lookout point in Mitchell’s Plain (close to Mndandi Beach). They will march through MP to Manenmberg to Heideveld and meet up with other groups from Valhalla Park and Langa etc then move to Athlone Stadium and march to Rondebosch Common. THAT’S CUC FAR TO MARCH!!!

I read that other areas include Hanover Park, Lavender Hill, Gugs, Hout Bay, Athlone, Bonteheuwel, Delft, Kraaifontein, Bloekombos, Stellbosch, Elsies and Ruyterwacht.

Thousands are expected to “take over” the Common over the weekend so don’t be surprised when you’re jogging on Friday and you see a mass of people come toward you!

Can someone explain the background to this to me? What is Rondebosch Commons, who wants to take it, why, and why is it being opposed?
 
Rondebosch common is a national monument, open piece of land bordering on the Red Cross Hospital.

Size around 100 acres.

It's also an important conservation area for many critically endangered plant species.

I also recall there are some old graves on the one side - perhaps just urban myth.

The protesters just want to spend 3 days buggering it up while they protest about their land demands.

Why Rondebosch Common ? Because they know that's where they will get the most resistance.

Typical mentality, can't do anything for themselves so they have to try & take it from other hard-working people.

Rather go ask your prez what happened to all the promised jobs you lousy lazy leeches.

Last time I drove through these areas I am sure that I noticed a number of sports fields and many vacant pieces of land in and around the area or am I just an ignorant rich dog walker?

+1... There's tooooons of space around those areas, but the colour of my skin says I must be an ignorant dog walker.

As for rondebosch common being an affluent area, I would call it closer to lower/middle class. Yes there's rondebosch on the one side but on the other sides there's basically red cross hospital and mowbray, including rustenburg high school.
 
Language use in RSA:

"Rich people" code word for whites.
"Leafy suburbs" code word for whites.
(thinly veiled racism)

My interpretation:
"Rich people" = educated people, who are working and employing
"Leafy suburbs" = planting trees for shade and fruit is an ancient European cultural phenomena born from the knowledge and experience that trees are valuable and worth investing in, even if it takes decades to grow.

The envy will not end, the indoctrination will not end.
A war is being fought, still, because it is all some people know.
 
I can't wait for this!! I stay in Rondebosch and we all got an email from our ward counciller detailing the events leading up to this weekend. The organisers of this protest failed to pitch up at the meeting they were supposed to have with the City of Cape Town. Also, they have failed to obtain the necessary documentation required from SAPS to go ahead with this.

In the email, our ward counciller said that the SAPS are going to be ready and waiting for these people to arrive.

I'm getting my popcorn ready for the showdown tomoro :)

Should be interesting.. SAPS is pretty good in the area, hope they won't let them step foot on it.
 
I think they would want a showdown with police.. maybe even tear gas and rubber bullets... so they can look like victims... images resembling the apartheid era.

Although these people protesting are different from those in US/UK. They are poor unlike the spoilt brats protesting with their iPads on Wall Street.
