Hi Folks

I'm looking at the getting a Netgear DGN2200M - that's the one with the 3G backup.
This post has me worried. Will I basically be stuck with non-update-able firmware if I get the Telkom model?

I just visited the Telkom Direct store and the Telkom modem is R 835. IC is selling the generic for R 899 on a trade-in/upgrade price.

Does the IC model have a proper 3pin SA plug with lightning protection?

Any feedback on this would be appreciated.

Modem is the same AFAIK except that Telkom's firmware currently does not allow you to use a USB storage device, there is a firmware that will be released next month that gives this ability back. Other than that the modem is the same.

As to lightning protection, can't comment on that :/.

I've never been able to recommend Telkom's routers. Even though the physical hardware is exactly the same as the vanilla routers, the firmware has always proven less reliable/updateable/etc.

A good example of this is the post above - for no apparent reason their original firmware apparently doesn't support USB storage. These are the kinds of issues that you avoid by not being locked into Telkom's firmware (and its update cycle).

To me, the extra R64 would feel well worth it. (I'm assuming you can source some old working/broken modem to trade-in)

Is there any way to replace the Telkom firmware?

I have the router - it was "free" - but no longer have a Telkom account. The lack of USB really irritated me, and I'd like to get that functionality working.

I got the IC version. It has a european 2pin 12V 1.5A adapter. They do however throw in a 2pin-euro to 3 pin SA adapter. No lightning protection though. I also need to add that the adapter is a bit noisy - high pitched tone.

The web interface has a "auto-upgrade" feature but it doesn't seem to get the latest version. Latest on the web is version 1.0.0.35.

I detects my E1752 and E367 but not the K3770.

It supports both Readyshare & 3G modem. It only has one USB so its either/or, unless you want to try a hub.

I see no reason why you shouldn't be able to switch to the Netgear firmware. All you should lose is the VPN-Lite wizard.

But, I haven't tried to flash mine ...
