I know they're the best bank generally - but it appears their systems go down more than the other guys, which is highly embarrassing and annoying

About 6 months back, I take a girl out for drinks ... and the card gets declined. Not an error - it's declined. Tried two other (FNB) cards and both declined. At this point she's offering to pay, but my ego gets in the way. So I walk to the ATM, draw the cash from the card and pay. Embarrassed, but OK

Yesterday pop through to Cresta, have breakfast and swipe - all good. Go through to Game and pick up a few things 15 minutes later and 'declined'. Ended up paying cash.

Last night coming home and fill up with petrol at 01:30am ... and the same thing happens with the petrol card, the credit card and my Discovery credit card (FNB) - all declined. Guy looked at me like a dodgy criminal and refused to take my license ... he wanted my spare wheel. Eventually agreed to my cellphone and had to drive to an ATM to draw the cash.

WTF FNB!

Why would he want to take ur spare wheel? I mean if you were a criminal - u could give it and never return.. LoL

IIRC they did have a warning message yesterday on their home page warning of downtime for maintenance so I presume it was due to that.

Yea, but the spare wheels costs more than petrol I'm sure ;)

Ah - didn't see that ...

The manager of the garage should explain to the employees to warn beforehand, instead of making me look like a chop. I'm actually nervous of using my card for anything now because the declines at Game and the petrol station

Unlucky, I've never had my card declined, have the cheque card and discovery CC.
But it makes sense for their systems to be temporarily down at 1am or such as this is when most banks perform system maintenance, albeit usually on a Sunday night.

It is agood idea to have the numbers of your credit card supplier on your cell phone. Call them or get the shop to call. The problem is often with the terminals, especially those from other banks.

My wife had a card declined problem in PnP some time ago. She insisted on a Supervisor, and surprise the card worked on another terminal.

I do ... tried phoning and half the time didn't even go through - the other half I got the first IVR, but when 'credit card' was selected the IVR just stopped

Weird, I was out last night and swiped quite a bit. Just checked my phone and I swiped at 1:31am.

I have not once experienced the issues you have. I now and then get a declined error on my chip cheque card, but am not blaming fnb, rather the old nedbank or other vendor CC machines.

It might also be that fnb does do a lot more maintenance, they are not rated the most secure bank for nothing.

I've had my FNB card fail on me either, however had time where the shop's equipment failed to contact FNB ect, so that has happened. Generally though, I at least have some cash on me so rarely ever in a situation where I have the problems you did.
