Teraco launches free national peering points

Blah, blah, blah. Reducing costs? For the ISP's or for the consumer? If the consumer, all I'm really interested in hearing is when, and by how much.
 
This sounds like it needs some more digging to get to the real story. We already have JINX and CINX peering points, so what does Teraco bring to the party ? Are they additional to the existing peering, or aiming to replace it ? If so, what's in it for them ? Sorry to sound cynical, but history is full of things that were offered free until the opposition was driven to the wall, and then became paid-for monopolies.

@Staffwriter: time to unplug from the backbone and go find out what isn't in the press releases.

Terraco is completely neutral, JINX etc are controlled by ISPA and costs are different for members and non-members. Some clients who host at Teraco might not want to have to buy fibre to JINX/CINX to be able to peer. The tech model seems different as well.

I agree though, I really would love a more in depth article explaining things:)

Imho it is to get more customers hosting with them, plain and simple luring technique.

the real question should be; what is in it for the SA internet community?
More peering points can never be a bad thing. :) choice is a driver for innovation;

Teraco does not run a network so this is unlikely to affect them directly.

It is potentially a drawcard for ISPs to host with them but the majority of the major ISPs already peer at CINX and JINX. You really need the big content/hosting ISPs at a peering point in order to make a big dent in the bandwidth that you purchase. Its always good to have as many interconnection points between ISPs to ensure the resiliance of the Internet but most of the Internet traffic flows from quite a small number of providers.
