Assistance with setting up a wifi network with 3G modem

Is there anyone out there that can assist me with setting up my wifi network? I have an 8ta sim but can't seem to be getting it to work with the router.

I am prepared to compensate you for your time - in the Midrand area.

PM if you can assist
 
I also got the 8ta 3g modem, coupled with a Trendnet wireless modem. Got it to work with no prior tech knowledge after a few tries. In the router root page, select MTN settings, that seemed to work.
 
I'd gladly be of assistance. Do you have router & modem make and model names? Also what is / isn't working?
 
It's a bit of an allsorts setup but here goes

8ta sim
Huawei E1820 3G dongle
netgear dgn2200 adsl2+ modem

I do not have adsl so that part of the modem is not being used.

The wifi network seems to be setup and working (my Blackberry is picking it up) but for some reason I am not able to get the internet to work off the 3G dongle.

I also don't know what I am supposed to do once I plug the 3G dongle into the modem - when/where am i supposed to enter my pin and start the internet connection.
 
Don't know where the menu for the router will be for me to set up the dongle

Also tried connecting my tablet to the wifi network this morning - the network is visible on the tablet but for some reason or the other the tablet will not connect

I do feel quite helpless as i am sure this it quite a simple issue to resolve but I am struggling
 
I don't think that Netgear has built-in 3G functionality, hence it's not auto connecting to the dongle. The USB port is for connecting to a storage device (flash disk / external HDD etc).

I'm not sure if your device is Open-WRT compatible (don't see it on the list) so you're probably going to have to get a new router to enable 3G access across your network

As for connecting to the network, if a device can see the network it should be able to connect. Just make sure you enter the correct network key.
 
I think you have the incorrect router for 3G. You need something like a TP-Link MR3220 which is designed to share 3G and ADSL
 
If the router has a USB input for a 3g dongle and it is wireless, then obviously it should work because that is what it is for. You have to change the settings via your browser by entering the root address of the modem. you also set your password there. Set the network settings to MTN which was on a dropdown list on my router. Otherwise, google the manual mtn settings. Also google your router for setup help. All my devices connect great simultaneously.
 
Not sure if this will help, but I got a 8.ta sim and Huwaii 3G router from them. After an hours struggle of getting the 3G to work all I ended up needing to do was enter +99 (or something) for the APN setting. That was it.

As stated earlier, that router doesn't have an input port for a 3g dongle.
 
Ok, so I have conceded that this router is not the correct one to get my USB modem to work (thanks for all the comments) but the wifi is working - am able to run plex on my tablet with my PC running as the server.

Is there a way to run the internet via my usb modem on the pc and and get the internet channeled via the wifi that i am achieving on the router?

Cos if this fails i will go and but a 3g modem/router that can take my usb modem - i just don't want to spend money unless I absolutely have to.
 
what operating system have you got on your PC/Laptop?
If Win7, you could put modem on PC and make PC a Wif-Fi hotspot


Alternatively, if you get a new router, the TL-MR3220 works well with the E1820 and as a mybroadband member you get discount from Uniterm Direct
 
Another option would be simply to activate Internet Connection Sharing on the PC and allow the other clients (pc's / tablets) to connect via the existing network.

So I managed to get the above going but seeing that it is the end of the month - my cap is gone!

Still have some midnight data left over so I for another couple of hours to give it a go but the signs look good.

Will that work though? OP doesn't seem to have a wireless card on his PC - he mentioned using the wireless function of the router to connect the tablet.
Whole other can of worms here, sorry, but is it maybe possible to plug the ethernet cable from PC into the WAN port of the ADSL Router? So the 3G USB modem gives internet to PC - PC acts as a gateway to the ADSL modem- which shares this wirelessly.

Mys, wow congrats! Please tell us how you connect your PC to the netgear - which port or whatever. Also, did you use Internet Connection Sharing on the 8ta dialup or the LAN network connection? I've been trying to help someone with this and the guys at my local store insist this kind of setup will not work, lol.
 
The ICS was enabled on the 8ta dial up. It (ICS) wasn't available on the properties of the 8ta dialup but there was some stuff i had to before that:

and i was good to go.

the only problem i have now is that there was a massive storm in Midrand on Friday night and power was down for the entire weekend.

tried to get my setup going this morning and the tablet isn't even able to stream wirelessly anymore - the apps just can't see my network (which it was doing before)

the weird thing is that the tablet does pick up the actual wifi signal - so the wifi from my router to the tablet is working

the other thing is that since this storm the lan point on the PC is displaying a continuous orange light and a flashing yellow - no green - this tells me that there is a problem at the network point on the PC. i am going to try and isolate this by changing cables, using another pc, etc as the surges prior to the power failure may have done something
 
Have you tried resetting the router. I don't have experience with this, but sounds like the router is still off-line since the power outage, and can't authenticate the tablet's connection request. I'd try a simple reboot of the device before changing any settings.

Thanks, the link on troubleshooting ICS was useful. One quick question for my own knowledge - when you got this to work, does the router remain hard-wired to the PC?
