RETAILER Woolworths has come under fire from some Christians for putting the halaal certification mark on hot cross bun packaging.

But Father Chris Townsend of the Southern African Catholic Bishops’ Conference has labelled the issue “nothing more than a storm in a baking pan”.

Yesterday, e-mails on the issue made the rounds around SA and it also featured on Twitter and Facebook.

Some Christians complained that hot cross buns had special significance to Christians and the halaal symbol should not be used.

Halaal certification signifies foods that can be eaten by Muslims.

Tony Seifart tweeted: “Woolworths SA clearly has no respect of the Christian Faith to make hot cross buns halaal.”

“It’s not about the ingredients – it’s the act of taking something tied to my beliefs and stamping it with a halaal symbol,” another tweet read.

Tanya Kovarsk tweeted: “Getting @saulkza hot cross buns from @WOOLWORTHS_SA. All the halaal talk has made him hungry for them.”

But Oresti Patricios disagreed. He tweeted: “Not about choice, it’s about stupidity. It’s only a hot cross bun, why can’t anyone eat it?”

Townsend said it was all an “over-reaction by some members of the Christian community” and that people needed to be more understanding.


Woolworths said: “We apologise and assure our customers that no offence was intended. Our next Easter offer will have both non-halaal certified hot cross buns and halaal-certified spiced buns.

I'd be willing to bet at least some of these people are the same ones who bitch and moan about "religious freedom" when their christian symbols have to be taken down from public schools in the US.
 
Yet these same people will quite happily eat Easter Eggs and put up Christmas Trees even though they are of pagan origin and were festivals that were borrowed from other religions! :rolleyes:

Who gives a crap what they put on the Hot Cross Bun? Just eat the dang thing... or don't. We don't care!

i gave a crap if it costs me a cent extra to have that certification !

Make your own Tali-buns if thats what you want... but leave mine ALONE !!!!

All religions has symbols and customs associated with that religion. Hot cross buns got it origin from the christian faith.
I can see why some folks would feel that the halaal mark(muslim religion) should not be on something viewed traditionally as a christian custom.
I'm also sure that the muslim community would be unhappy if somebody were to put a big christian cross on top of 1 of their mosque's.

I agree to a certain extent but I feel that some tolerance is in order. I would rather have everyone enjoy what is seen as a Christian symbol than have the religion look like a club for only a select few.
 
Sad, ignorant Christians throwing a tantrum yet again. Send them to bed with no hot cross buns as punishment.

Do Christians have a single tradition that hasn't been stolen from Paganism? And the most embarrassing thing on their part is that they don't even know the true origins of their 'sacred' traditions.

Hi

As far as I know whether a food item is halaal or not its the same price. Like meat for example. I compared the prices with the spar (non halaal) and a muslim butcher whom I buy from and they are the same. Slight variances here and there but like a few rands.

Exactly... this is my point.

Make what ever funny things you want but don't make me pay extra because you want some dude in a dress to pray for the bun.

Next year... Kosher bacon for Diwali.
 
This is so petty. Boycott WW over a Halal sticker? Ok, while they're at they might as well boycott Coca-cola, Steers, Spur, kelloggs, Bakers, Provita, Debonairs, Spur, KFC.... they all have the Halal logo or certification.

Why do these people always get so upset over something so insignificant.

Agree. I also feel it's a bit stupid / A storm in a tea cup.
But still - you got an christian custom/product being branded by an muslim branding/custom.
I'm sure you can see how such a situation could confuse/send out the wrong kind of information and upset people.

Personally I like PnP's buns more than woolies, so I don't have a problem :D
