Some pleasing aspects to this report. 212 000 jobs this year so far is great strides to recovering the million or so lost to the post 2008 Crisis.

Johannesburg - Around 108 000 jobs were created in March, up from 24 000 in February, according to the Adcorp Employment Index released on Tuesday.

It was also higher than the 80 000 created in January and the figure, the strongest since the 2009 recession, showed that employment grew at an annualised rate of 6.8% for March.

Some good highlights here as well, IMO

Temporary employment grew by 11.3% and permanent jobs by 9.2%.

Employment growth in transport and logistics grew by 15.2%, electricity and utilities 13.3% and mining 12%.

As for the Union issue, personally I would see very little reason to join a union if the increases are implemented across the board anyway. but thats their issue to deal with I guess.

Even though I generally hate unions, I understand that for most people at the bottom they give them the much needed bargaining powers. Have a look at ABSA as an example. Very few people are unionised there (SASBO) and ABSA is retrenching even though they declared 22% profits for the financial year that has just past.
 
This is the unions own fault. They are their own worst enemies.

One day we will have no unions and it will actually be a problem.

Jobs up, unions down - good news all round then.

I'd love to see a world where unions were not a necessity, but for many people it is the only way they have any bargaining power. If we must have unions though I'd like to see them acting responsibly.

That's a case where I'd fully support a union taking on the company. Similarly in cases where they're showering top executives with money, then turn around and tell everyone else there's no money.
