Warning: police may confiscate your cellphone

Good, but why not extend this to reckless driving and confiscate their licenses.

Hec, I think it should be
1) Impound car
2) Confiscate driving license
3) Fine of at least 10K

...People will start driving proper, quickly. Just yesterday I was right next to bumper bashing. Suspect cell user, why? because as she was getting out the phone was quickly switched off.

The worst are these ******s who text while driving. I nearly lost my self control the other day when this skinny little spikey-haired *****nut in front of me was weaving all over the road while texting. It took all my willpower t the next robot to not get out of my car, smash his window and throw the phone across the intersection.

...It took all my willpower ... not get out of my car...and throw the phone across the intersection...
...accidentally into the path of an oncoming car, hitting it square in on the windscreen causing the driver to have the biggest fright of their live, loosing control and crashing into you - killing you, the texting driver and the driver hit by the phone instantly.

Moral of the story :
  • Road rage is way more dangerous.
  • Pulling people over is a massive cause of distraction.

DO IT!!!!
I see atleast 10 people a day on their phones driving like idiots!!
In the US the first thing an insurance company will do is demand a log from the cellphone company to determine if the driver's phone was being used during the time of the incident. If it was . . . kiss the claim goodbye.

I'm all for this.

Just this morning, I was driving behind my colleague and some oke tried to change lanes and almost drove into her; he wasn't looking at what he was doing because he was on his cell - but check this, he had an earpiece on but he was still distracted.

I'd venture at no cell phone usage while driving, or stick to the bare minimum like "Can't talk now because I'm driving".

What really gets my goat is the idiots who can't even stop using their phone when reversing out of a parking bay :wtf:

Why can't they wait until they've finished their conversation

I agree. I never answer my phone when I'm driving.

I wonder how long before someone lays a charge of theft against police for stealing their cellphones.

Problem here is with out corrupt cops they will just see this as a free cellphone scheme!
Stop car, claim driver was talking, take cellphone, give to kids, sell for cokes, repeat.
If they can't even keep their own handguns from being lost/stolen what do you think is gonna happen when they have your cellphone?

+10000 - by the time you reach the station your phone will be for sale on gumtree by Sargent Ntombazana or Detective De Villiers will love his "upgrade"

Likewise, I switch it off and enjoy the peace & quiet.

While I don't agree with confiscating phones (particularly the "3 tickets and it's gone" aspect - who's counting?) how else do you police the morons who can't live without 24/7 communications and persist in not using "hands free" kits?

And what will happen when the cops get caught - fired ? hope so they supposed to set an example

And yet again the biggest killer of them all slips by unnoticed, in pretty much every car that drives by... with occupants not wearing seatbelts :(

This cannot work. How does a cop prove that you were using your phone? Is his word against yours, boom any cop in need of money will simply take your phone. Maybe after years of court will earn your phone back.

I never use my phone while driving mainly cause I dont want to damage my car and i KNOW i cannot concentrate/drive properly while using it. But i am 100% against giving the cops power to take away my phone legally "if" he thinks i was using it

yes this would be a problem. The idea is good in theory, but wont work in this country.
