Flawed business model that does not scale

NimbleTV is trying to make good on the promise of “TV Everywhere” that has eluded cable providers and customers alike...

There are at last count at least 150+ of these providers available. (some of them ligit - like nimble seems to be, other just rogue players multicasting scrambled satellite feeds).

Even on the 30Mbps fibre connection which I am on, flawless HD video is only practically possible with a buffer size of about 150seconds. I happen to be on a truly uncapped package but if you pay for data on a volume based basis this will not fly. Principally because the telco regards this service as a highly costly over the top application adding zero value. So when it comes to shaping traffic, a service like this will be first to face throttling.

The logical decision is to move content out to the edges of the packet data network - by putting your head-ends in DSLAM's, instead of supporting a separate international end to end stream from the source to the destination for every single viewer... This requires the broadcasting service to closely align itself with the telco

Furthermore, proper HD TV over mobile packet data network is a myth. Even with LTE in 2 x 20 MHz, your aggregate over the air data rate per sector is only about 125Mbps on current Release 8 or 9, which means you can have 20 people max throughout a cell watching television and the capacity is depleted....

Would be nice to live somewhere where FTTH is as available as running H2O....:-)

Primer on Digital TV Signals:

The new Digital Television Formats utilize a different signal process providing a data stream as opposed to an analog video signal.

This permits a DTV (or HDTV) signal to carry far more signal information, and also permits small signal errors to be removed prior to display.

A DTV signal may be compared to a standard NTSC signal in a number of ways:

1) Signals will appear within the 6 MHz allocation of a normal NTSC signal

2) Instead of the Monochrome/Chroma/Audio signal (with three peaks) the DTV signal will show as a "6 MHz Raised Noise Floor"", with a spike or peak on the lower or left side of the waveform.

3) DTV signal will appear almost like a spread spectrum signal with a raised noise floor, but is actually a "pseudo spread spectrum" type of signal.

4) The DTV data signal is actually randomized in order to create a "flat noise like" spectrum common with digital signal transmission. This permits maximum channel efficiency and keeps the signal from interfering with nearby channels (so we can have three HDTV channels right next to each other).

5) The spike or peak on the lower side of the waveform is called the "ATSC Pilot" which provides one of three timing signals within the data stream.

6) The ATSC Pilot will consume about 7% of the total transmitted power, and will be smaller than a typical NTSC visual carrier (some simple math will provide a clue to how legitimate the signal is).



Notice that the bandwidth is roughly the same as a regular TV channel, and how the signal almost appears to be a spread spectrum signal. Also notice the ATSC carrier peak on the left side of the signal.



Simplified description of how the signal is created:

The MPEG circuit effectively takes a rasterized image, and transmits only what is changing or is different between video frames.

This digital data is converted into a high speed 19.39 Mbit/Second data stream that is created from an MPEG encoder circuit and provided to a DTV circuit (if it going to be broadcast via a TV channel).

The DTV circuit then takes this 19.39 Mbit signal adds framing information, and randomizes the data to "smooth" it out. Next the data stream is subjected to Reed-Solomon Encoding which breaks the stream into 207 byte packets.

Then signal is further broken up into Trellis Convolution Code which breaks the data up into four 2-bit words with built-in error correction.

A series of sync signals is then mixed with the data stream (Segment Sync, Field Sync, and ATSC Pilot) and the resulting signal applied to a 8-VSB modulator (or "8-Level - Vestigal Side Band") which provides the baseband signal.

The baseband signal is then mixed with a carrier signal to "up-convert" it to the desired channel or frequency.

This up-converted signal is typically 5.38 MHz wide and will show three distinct sync signals (the ATSC signal being the most obvious). The signal will normally be totally confined to within 90% of the 6 MHz channel allocation.

Keep in mind that MPEG is the same compression method used on your DVD player, and on DSS Satellite systems (do you see a trend here?).

Also remember that MPEG (and MPEG-like) video signals are fairly easy to create in an eavesdropping device. This eavesdropping signal may then be hidden inside of an already present DTV signal, or may be applied to a raw conductor.

There are already several companies who make compressed video/MPEG-like products for video eavesdropping which use the power lines or alarm circuits to conduct the signal back the listening post.

So you are saying that we would not be able to have HD over ADSL/

How are they going to get around the Licensing Restrictions that channel providers are currently subject to? :confused:
Certain channels are not allowed to be broadcast in other countries for many reasons, including rights ownership, advertising agreements, exclusion contracts, etc. :(
I think they are being a bit overly hopeful when they say "anywhere in the world" ... will probably end up being "This service is not available in your region" just like all the other sites. :rolleyes:
You can't just wave a magic wand and make years and years of legislation and contractual agreements disappear.

If they tried to start broadcasting some of those channels, they will have hundreds of providers slapping lawsuits on them left, right, and center so much that they won't see the light of day for decades.
Those other providers paid a lot of money for exclusive distribution rights. Their legal teams will be on this faster than an HD movie can fit through a 1 mbps connection.
 
Even if this sounds too good to be true for us Saffers, it's still a major step in the right direction. Looks like the major players are finally gathering that this is the way forward if they want to continue being profitable.

Basically for me it boils do to the fact that I think there was a worry that releasing digitally would cause a massive surge in piracy as it would be so easy to share the content. Yes, it would but they would also be making more money because this service is affordable and who cares if there is more piracy if the end result is more money in the networks' pockets. I think if services like this become commonplace, there will be a rise in pirated content but this would subside as people start realising that they can actually pay a small amount for a service that is totally legal and convenient. And that is how you fight piracy.

Let's hope there is a big drive to get services like this up and running soon.
