How do I connect My Laptop to My TV...

I'm trying to connect my laptop to my TV with the HDMI cable, but the display is weird and shows horizontal cray and white lines and duplicate image on the TV, there is colour... Its a TELEFUNKEN 22cm LED TV and I have a HP Dv6 laptop, I cannot seem to get a good clear image in 16:9 but in 4:3 it works but looks stupid... Does anybody have a clue?
 
Does the desktop display correctly and the problem only occur with video?

If your laptop has VGA try connecting this way and see what happens.
VGA to RCA.

Yes windows 7 does display, I can move the cursor, but I cannot see what's happening cause of the lines and doubles and distortion..

Use the Windows button and press P together to get the image to transfer to the tv, duplicate it first. Then try adjusting the Resolution on the Laptop if it's not working straight away :)
