Ok, so I went and bought myself a new 42" LG 3D TV (100MHz). Works fine. Picture is great, sound not so much but that is easy to get around and it has the 2D - 3D converter so that I don't need a special Bluray player should I want to watch something in 3D.

There is one thing I've noticed though with my DSTV PVR that is off. Every time I change the TV's input source from HDMI 1 (DSTV) to HDMI 2 or whichever source, the PVR displays a message "hdCP". With that message, the PVR basically becomes unusable and I have to unplug it and plug it in again before the remote responds again.

Any ideas as to why? And more importantly, how to fix.

Sounds like a HDCP communication incompatibilities. Go to the DSTV forums, you'll find plenty of similar stories.

Only thing you can do is make sure HDPVR is upgraded, and download & upgrade TV's firmware to the latest available version.

Basically the TV isn't confirming HDCP signals with the HDPVR when its not on HDMI 1, so the PVR hangs, granted it shouldn't hang & become unresponsive
Try updating the TVs firmware. I assume you have updated software on the HDPVR

I have the same TV with the 2P HD PVR,
I have the same problem, I believe that the reason for this is that most newer tv's disable the HDMI ports when not in use, probably to save power or for other reasons unknown. anyway this means that the HDMI port sorta deactivates, thus the HDCP connection between the decoder and TV has broken, this is why the error disappears when you change back to the HD PVR input. I think the problem is with Multichioce themselves as they have not configured the HDPVR software correctly. There is certainly no problem with my TV as all the other HDMI devices work perfectly

I think its more to do with vendor specific HDMI implementations. I have 2 Samsungs (2010 LCD & 2011 LED) and neither have any issue with the HDPVR2P.

Neither switching sources (to other HDMI or VGA) nor standby mode ever produce the HdCP message. Only time I see it is if I power off the TVs at the mains.

This is the first time I've ever seen this issue.
I also think the HDMI port deactivates when not in use. It looks like one of the tv's "features". However, in my case, switching back to HDMI 1 does not work. Probably cause the decoder is freezing and freaking out. Have to do a cold start.

As long as the TV is set on HDMI 1, it doesn't matter if I turn the TV off or whatever... the error only occurs as soon as I switch the input source.

I think there were 3 different HD PVR decoders released. The first one that had lots of issues, then the middle one (which is the one I have) and then the newer one that only supports recording one channel and watching another at the same time. My PVR software is up to date though... I know that because I notice everytime Multichoice does an update... things tend to become more unstable with each update.
I'll check with Multichoice perhaps

Yeah mine gives the same problems, the decoder freezes when that HDCP error occurrs and the only way to fix the error is to reset the pvr, its flippen annoying as the pvr is connected in extra view, so if somebody is playing ps3 for example on the LG TV and I say wanna watch something on the Hd pvr in the other room, when that hdcp error is on the decoder refuses to respond to any commands

Had the exact same problem... Old Samsung plasma when turned off did not put the HD-PVR into standby, recently changed to a newer LED Samsung and noticed yesterday that when I turn this new TV off, a few seconds later the PVR started flashing the "hdcp" error and totally froze, even when the TV was turned back on. I know this is an old discussion but thought my solution may help anyone else that is having this problem, it helped us at least. I just plugged the yellow plug/video of a component cable into the back of the PVR and left the other side unplugged, now when I turn the TV off the PVR carries on running and can be watched in another room.

I have the same problem.. my work-around is to put the HDPVR in standby mode prior to changing source on tv.. once I change back, I press the power button to bring the pvr out of standby...
Other than that, I have to unplug power cable and then plug back in.. so work-around is way less hassle.
