MY wife is having issues with her laptop, it's a company laptop and they supply a 3G sim for her.
Recently the company has been complaining of a 3G data bill of over R7000 and it's still happening.

their IT support is useless and doesn't install any monitoring software and seem to consult vodacom.

Her usage under Vodacoms usage meter is only 500+ mb p/m so this must lie with Vodacom?

Any free software we can use to just check that nothing on her laptop is downloading or chewing through data?

It's a DEll laptop, no dongle, sim is by battery.

OS is XP sp3

Netlimiter.

Also possible things to check :

1. Is Windowsupdates enabled?
2. What size data bundle is on the SIM? Doesn't help if there's a 500Mb data bundle and her email usage is above that.

Disabled

Not sure what size they gave her , they will not let her know.

I'll try install one of the free data monitors and see.

LOLWHUT

Are they ijits?

We do let our users know what their data bundle size is - before they sign their arm and leg away :D

I suspect that her data bundle is either 250Mb or 500Mb - yet she pulls more than that in email.

Or some naughty thing is merrily spamming away on her laptop.

Good luck!

She works for PWC , for some reason their IT guys don't release the information?
Checked and the bill for June amounted to over R7300.

They VPN into their respective branches for internet and email.

All the networks is taking double data when you using high speeds downloads. They probably think we are stupid enough to just pay their bill and never confront them over missing data. I have installed on my windows 10 a free app provided by Microsoft for free that is measuring your data usage on all levels and has a printable report that you can use to confront your network provider stealing your data here is the link to windows 10 data meter not sure if it will work on windows 7 and 8 .... https://www.microsoft.com/en-za/p/data-usage/9wzdncrdpqd5?activetab=pivot:overviewtab

Thats actually a cool app... that also scared me a little.

I installed it today and as a joke I clicked on previous month, and lo and behold it actually filled the data:

No idea where it got it but everything was there from usage to totals. Color me impressed. Also paid the R25 for Ad free version.

Am I the only one that noticed it's a laptop running XP? Hope its got a decent antivirus.

You not only one... I just kept shus on the subject.

Any half decent IT dept wont allow that crap on their network let alone let a user go home with one to connect to the internet and VPN to the office with it. (Then again if they don't want to tell you how much data you have what do you expect)

I have 2 XP PC's here driving Factory machines that I don't allow to connect to my network. Users have to transfer data via USB.

Tend to think when IT doesn't want to tell you something its because they don't know how, same with our IT guy who tells me that the address Cache on Outlook cannot be restored and is supposed to be lost when shutting down, its because he doesn't know how. Him and OP's IT guys are lying idiots, I also for some reason feel his IT guy is called Frikkie or something:ROFL:

Your windows network software as well as your motherboard bios is keeping your data usage as long as six months that is why even when formatted a hard drive and installed a new windows sometimes when re installing other software it seems the software settings are the same as before formatted. just because the settings was saved in your motherboard bios as well as hidden registry files that are not deleted when format. that is why you are able to do recovery's of lost files after formatted. And no network provider can argue about your windows data measurements because it is trustworthy and not possible to do changes on the meter your self
