The modem is locked by Telkom :(

I need higher upload speeds so the Business department said i can try VDSL for a week and see if it is better than DSL.
But mind you our exchange has VDSL cards and ADSL2+ IMAX's but we are still on ATM and NOT the Metro Ethernet yet.

So once our exchange is upgraded to ME then they said i can get VDSL @ 40mbps down and 16mbps up. until then this is the best they can do.

But mind you i have not been give a price of what the current connection will cost per month :wtf:

So i might just wait for ME to happen here.

I got to play with the new VDSL today, not very impressive but the upload is much better!
Using a Billion 8200N VDSL Router syncing at 10mbps down and 5mbps up.
Using Mweb Capped account.

My copper length is 400meters from the MSAN.

Pitty it is just a test for a week

How did you get selected for the VDSL trials?

Exchange upgrade to metro-e ? Prepare for the longest wait of your life.

Telkom people will say anything to end the telephone conversation, so they can go back to playing dominos.

I have 3 Business ADSL lines, called 10217 told them I need a higher upload speed than 512kbps, they logged a call with the regional planners and about a month later I got a call from them in Durban asking if i would like to try VDSL for 1 week and see of it preforms better than my current solution, as Telkom said they had VDSL ports available in the exchange.

But standard ADSL seems to be much the same as VDSL, I guess it is due to the fact that we are on ATM backhaul and not Metro Ethernet.

I Jelly.

all I want is a higher upload speed than 512. its all well and good that one can pull down data at 10mbps, but when you are hosting skypecalls (To america, with 14 people*), uploading AIFF files and HD images, upload becomes critical. oh yeah, and gaming. lets not forget how critical that is.

*I belong to a small Skype group that regularly initiate a group call that goes up to like 18 people. whenever I host the call, I constantly hear complaints about the quality (The Best - "Your internet is Sh!##ing in the bed!"). this is all because of upload speed. all I can say is - tlkm pls.

But i may be wrong but i dont think so.
53 total for the country at this stage.
I have MSANs pictures on my profile note the battery box at the bottom that is the only difference from the UMC has no battery box.

According to Telkom we have 10 VDSL ports inside the physical exchange, so when I asked the Durban guys they said they labeled it as a MSAN's but it is not!

And according to them my copper length is 400 meters from the exchange/MSAN/IMAX/DSLAM/what ever I am connected to...

I guess it it just used for testing? not sure, will wait for them to call me again and find out what their plans are.....
But I do know for sure there is a MSAN in Pietermartizburg as well as one of my clients are connected to it and are syncing at 20mbps.

Will see if I can locate it and take pictures next time I go through....

I am also sure Telkom have a lot going on behind the scene's no one knows about... We will wake up one day and all be syncing at 24mbps (one can only dream)

You are probably on the IMAX DSLAM,are you near the center of richmond ? the exchange is at the bottom of the vodacom tower.

So how does one determine if they are connected to an IMAX/ MSAN? and how do we figure out when an upgrade will be coming?

I do hope soon. and hopefully telkom will introduce a pricing structure for VDSL soon. better to know what we are in for.

The MSANs are on field trial 53 of them not all installed yet but they getting there i only know Durban is getting 3 initially dont know where the rest are going. When they switch them on(MSANs) the people wont know they are on them they will run at the same speed as before on the old DSLAMs only later are they going to up the speed to the full 40 meg, just software change.

Yep, just stopped to chat to the techies completing the installation of the one on the cnr of Crestwood & Franschoek in Lonehill. They reconned cutover of 465 & 467 should happen around end of the month.

Drops my local lead from ±4300m (59dB attn) to around 1800m, so no VDSL for me but should get a solid 10Mbps ADSL (& hopefully 20Mbps later).

PS: Anyone know whether Telkom's new MSAN equipment supports ADSL2+ Annex M (potential ±2.5Mbps uplink)?
