Hackers take on Android smartphone at Black Hat hacking convention

scary stuff- google needs to allow people to download their own updates rather than wait for the manufacturers to push them out.
 
for those of us that root, would it be likely that aosp roms would take care of these vulnerabilities much quicker?

You assume so. I'm no expert but don't custom roms come with their own set of vulnerabilities?

Maybe, but I don't think anyone is going to go to all the trouble of targeting custom ROMs with their small userbase
