The government is planning a new R2-billion town in President Jacob Zuma's home village of Nkandla and taxpayers will have to pick up half the tab, the Mail & Guardian reported on Friday.

Initial estimates were that the government would have to direct more than R1-billion of taxpayers' money into the development.

at the rate they overspend on stuff, we lucky if that R2bil actually buys anything more than a statue of him ;)
 
The sad part is that people wouldn't mind if tax payers money were to be used in a constructive way here... and not to pay R200k for a hammer and R1k per nail.
 
WTF... what the hell does Nkandla have going for it, other than it being Zuma's "home"..

FFS, like the Private Sector is going to pour R1bn into an area that probably won't actually work. The Private Sector would rather pump R1bn into Eshowe or Richards Bay since they're ON major transportation routes, unlike this stupid bloody backwater.

I also don't think the topography of the area is all that suited to being "built up", it looks quite hilly and such.

Shhhh! Don't give them ideas. Just now that divert one of the major road routes through "Nkandla" to make it a viable idea :p
 
I went there once there is a shop and a law court and a police station and that is about it .
That is a one horse town and the horse died long time ago .
 
Taxpayers only paying half the tab? Who the hell is paying the other half? I guess that's what they are still wondering. I also guess it will be whoever wants tenders. They are going to need a helluva lot more than 2 bil to build a "new york city".
