When my ISP tells me they've reset my port.

Does this generally mean they've reset the ADSL connection to the DSLAM?

I thought only Telkom had this ability?

When I asked MWEB to reset my port (I'm not renting my line through them) they said they could only do this if I rented my line from them and they don't have authority to do this otherwise.

Surely if my ISP says tehy've reset my port, it should, well, reset? My router never shows the line has dropped when they say they have reset. Only when I've phoned Telkom myself and they reset the port does it resync my router.

Apologies for the badly written post, yeehaa painkillers!

only telkom can reset DSLAM ports. (if line through MWeb they can do so through Telkom)... Resetting port resets your profile... causing maximum sync.. if max sync is unstable... it will resync lower and lower until its stable... and then up again.. etc, etc.

That profile is retained on your port... so when in future you resync.. it first tries your last stable sync speed and not port max.

Telkom have a nifty little service called uniweb that ISP's can use to monitor your line. This facility will only allow a port reset if the line is with the ISP.

That's what I thought it meant, since I've had my port reset while on the phone with Telkom and immediately the line will drop and resync.

If the above is correct then I'm not sure what Openweb are resetting.
