So i managed to get hold of a desktop pc which, if i'm not mistaken, is one of those Mecer pre-built pc's. The specs aren't too bad, with an i5, 4gb ram, 500gb HDD... (it's using onboard graphics but i'll purchase a gfx card for it).

Anyway, annoyingly it has Windows home premium 32 bit installed! It has no disc and no sticker on the side with the product key on it. So, can i run one of those utilities to obtain the product key which has been used?

If so, can i then download a Win 7 64 bit home premium iso and use that product key to activate that? (ie can a 32 bit activation key be used to activate the 64 bit version too). What worries me is that when i go control panel->system, it shows the windows activation ID with "OEM" in it. If it is an OEM version, will a normal windows disc even work or, is the OEM version needed?

Lastly, I am well aware that upgrading from 32-64bit will require a clean install..

Thanks.

Hi Kayoss,

I have managed to this a good few times using the same key.
It seems the keys are not isolated to a 32 or 64bit, but rather the version, eg home premium is loaded again.

Hope This Helps...

Thanks.

What if it does turn out to be an OEM version of Home Premium? Would my activation code still work on a regular Win 7 Home Prem DVD?.. Although, being a Mecer pre-built, why would they even use an OEM version.

Windows 7 keys are provider agnostic, they did away with the differentiation for keys between OEMs and direct. There was however automatic activation based on specific system bioses for some manufacturers so you would have to use the regular activation

If it does not work there's always Windows Loader by Daz...

Great, thanks for the replies, will give it a go..
