April Jones, missing five-year-old in Wales: as it happened

I am amazed at the number of children who go missing in the UK on a regular basis. It just seems out of proportion.

Out of proportion to what - as per other posts they are most likely considerably lower than SA?

In SA people leave Durban to go home leaving their kids stranded and don't even report it.

And here when young girls go missing you hardly hear about it. :(

Like who?

True; over there they (rightly) make a big deal out of it in the media.

Not true. According to this site, in the UK, a child is reported missing every 3 minutes.
The media doesn't make a big deal for every child that goes missing there.

According to this site, in South Africa, a child goes missing every six hours.

Trafficking in children is a global problem affecting large numbers of children. According to UNICEF and World Concern some estimates have as many as 1.2 million children being trafficked every year.

Like the seven year old girl who was kidnapped in front of a friend's house in Klerksdorp on Sunday by some POS in a blue hatchback.
Fortunately they got his license number.
She was found alive two days later in his flat alive, but covered in blood from him having raped her repeatedly for two days.
He was passed out from drugs and alcohol.
Apparently when his rap sheet was pulled up, he is already wanted for murder, theft, carjacking and rape.
He will probably be out again in a few weeks.
Meanwhile the little girl has been put on ARV's and has to live with torn and scarred genitals for the rest of her life.

There was nothing in the paper about that.

UK - a child goes missing in Tescos. Found in short order -OR- it makes the news.

Runaways may be a different story there but that's a different kettle of fish as it is here.

Clearly not stats based on the same thing.

Point is that this idea that the media makes a big deal out of every child that goes missing in the UK, while in SA the media never reports it, is false.

The media in the UK does not make a big deal out of every missing child and missing children are often reported here. It's a world wide problem - like most international / multinational crime syndicates - child trafficking is not bound by borders and children go missing all over the world in depressingly high numbers.

Sounds like you know a lot about it.

If simply knowing that human trafficking by international crime syndicates and drug cartels is a world wide problem means I know 'a lot about it' then you need to read more about the world we live in.

That is sick. Beyond disgusting.

Nah, I'll leave the sick stuff to experts like you.

Lol, I didn't realise that being aware of the dangers your faces in society today is considered 'sick'. I guess that means turning a blind eye is considered healthy by you? Don't ever go look at those websites of missing children gary, someone will think you're sick and if you ever happen to actually see a child you recognise as a missing child you better not let on or they'll know you're sick for sure

just watched the interview with her mother. there is more to this than meets the eye here. that crying is all fake from her mother i can tell you now. not a tear ran down her face. the man who supposedly took this child is a friend of the family as well. too many things don't add up here.

What are you implying ?

Apparently a family friend/acquintance is involved in her disappearance; he is the one who is currently being questioned.

watch the interview blu. there is something amiss here. this child is a special needs child as well. who leaves their child outside alone for one second at that time of night knowing the evils lurking out there. not buying this one for one second.

I'll tell you this, Celine: April's mother looked much worse than e.g. Madeleine McCann's mother during tv interviews. Kate McCann seldom showed emotion and always looked perfectly groomed and coiffed, not the epitome of a grieving mother ..... so I am not sure if that is an acceptable yardstick.

As to April being outside: kids like to play outside; you cannot keep a child cooped up in the house all day,so I can understand why she might have been playing outside.

I have other issues with this case, such as why did the police release a picture of the suspect after they arrested him and put him in custody?? Normally you release a picture of a suspect if the police is still looking for him, not when he has already been arrested. Makes no sense to me.

I am also wondering on what basis they are detaining him; simply because according to one witness he was seen with April, or what ?
