Hi,the Lenovo Y580 was recently launched in South-Africa. This is an awesome laptop with a great CPU(i7-3610QM ) and GPU(NVIDIA GeForce GTX660M 2GB) for less than 10K. At the moment the only ones available here is the 209948U model, which has a 1366x768 screen and a DVD player.

Does anyone know of a re seller which sells the model with the Full HD screen and the Blue Ray player?(dont really care about Blue Ray but it put comes with the package)

The model with the HD only screen is still a great buy, but would love to get my hands on the Full HD version.
Even if the price is then around 12K, there is not something out there as far as I can see that will beat it for the price.
Any help will be appreciated.

Personally I don't know if I could handle full hd on a 15.6 inch, maybe 1600x900.

You will probably need to import though, laptop imports are so limited in SA and pricing is pathetic. Doing the shipping and import duty should get you to the same price point, I think its $999 dollars for the full hd model.

Those Y580's really look great spec wise, definitely considering stuffing my x-mas stocking with one.

Thanks for the reply, but my personal choice is a Full HD display :). I have seen a few Full HD displays on 15.5 inch laptops and looked awesome to me. I have looked at the Dell Inspiron 15R which has one but is nearly 12K and has a lower spec cpu and gpu.

The Lenovo Y580's GPU & CPU are just miles ahead of any other laptop for its price range.
I'd also love to know where to source one with a FullHD screen and extended warranty!

Thanks for the help. Quickly looked up Lenovo 59344772. This is the same product number stated on primeshop and laptopdirect.com. And the price for the "full HD" on primeshop is also around 10k. No way will they be selling it for that amount but will email them nun the less.

Regarding the upgrade I have done a bit of research. As far as I can see the Full HD model needs a 40 pin connector from the mobo just for the screen. While the HD version uses a 30 pin for the screen and the other 10 pin for the camera. So you will need a connector that will fit the Full HD screen and camera. But if those guys have the ability to upgrade it I will definitely consider it.

Nah i doubt that they would have the Full HD version. No one else in South-Afirca distributes it as far as I can tell

Had a look Y580 at the student deals website. i7 and gtx 660 at that price is a win. The only thing stopping me is the screen. Do you guys think the full hd screen will make a huge difference?

It will make a difference. For me personally with a full hd screen you will be able to have for example two word documents open side by side. This really works well for me because I am doing programming. So I will always have a program such as visual studio running next to a pdf document.Although if you will be hooking it up to an external monitor this wont be a problem.

If you want to use it for gaming on the side you will be able to play most games on ultra having a higher fps rate but lower resolution.
The thing is you are saving so much. At the moment I am trying to find out if you will be able to replace the hd with a full HD screen somewhere.

This^ is what I have come across it works for the Y560 but not sure if it will work for the Y580

Have thought about replacing the screen; however, I am rather sure it would void one's warranty?

I think the best route would perhaps be to get an external monitor; the screen resolution as is would use less battery power, so perhaps it is a positive, in a way.

And the difference isn't that much if you don't use all that much hd content.

Not a given, models vary a lot across territories. Also ask them for the full model number when you email them so you can independently verify.
