ADSL Throttling or Congestion?

Hi everyone,

We've been running a 1mbps (Faster) adsl line for over a year now at full speed without any sync issues.

During the first week of September 2012 I noticed the speed went up to 2mbps, clearly part of the telkom upgrades, and it was great for two weeks, then the speed suddenly went down to 1mbps for a week and on 24 September at 12:00 the speed went down to 512kbps and it has just stayed like that 24/7 no matter business or after hours.

I reported the line twice and Telkom say there is nothing wrong and clearly could not be noise or attenuation as it worked 100% before.

The ISP says there is noting wrong and I even got 2 other adsl data accounts (1 IS and 1 SAIX) just to test and they are all very very slow with massive latency.

From time to time we could burst up to 1mbps for about 10 seconds but that has now also stopped.

Could this be Throttling from Telkom or is it Congestion of the exchange?
How can we address this and have it fixed?
Does Telkom use ASSIA Optimisation or something similar as is used in other countries?

Sounds like congestion off the bat.

If all your ISP's are having the same problem it's a Telkom issue. If you do a traceroute to a website, is the hop directly after your router very slow?

I stay in Wilgeheuwel JHB and since the 2mb upgrades my line has become useless. In the day I get ok speed and ping but from 7pm onwards I may as well use a 56k dial up modem. 1000+ ping. Must be a !@$!%^%~! congested exchange. Im seriously considering canceling my adsl as it is useless when i need it

Hi There,
Firstly you do not say what package you are on with the ISP. If you are on a 512 package they may limit you to that. If it is a 2MB package then I would agree it is congestion at the exchange that is limiting you.
@rakabos it sounds like you do have a congested exchange.

Regards

Tim

Yes, definitely seeing problems in Wilgeheuwel too. Every evening between about 17:00 and 0:00 the latency climbs to as much as 2000ms. I've reported it to Telkom but I have not yet had any feedback.

ambo, shall we start a new thread for Wilgeheuwel users, see how many guys are on here?
