We found out last week we are expecting a baby girl - all is well and she even waved at us on the sonar! We are very exited and currently looking at converting a room into a nursery and to start purchasing baby stuff ... And this is where I am kinda stuck ... this is our first child and would like some advise from those of you who have gone through this already.

The silly season is upon us, so there might be a lot of specials around which we can look into, but your help to decide what is good or bad will greatly be appreciated! (Yup ... not even born yet and I have to fork out cash ... happily though :p) Even if you know of current "specials" for baby stuff, that would also be welcome.

Don't leave anything out - tell us what your experiences were/are.
e.g. Furniture in the nursery, car seats, strollers, nappies, sterilisers, cams, etc.

Looking forward to hear from you!!! ;)

Check takealot.com... so far we've bought quite a few things from them.

Join every club you can think of, they all give discounts... we joined : woolworths, discovery (a lot of reggies, etc discounts) and dischem. They each give you a bag full of goodies and coupons.

Research car chairs thoroughly... it gets confusing, some will last longer than others but are more expensive, some can offer greater upgrade options.

Don't buy a lot of baby clothes... Our lighty only fitted into 1-3 months for a week or 2.

Bottle making we bought a steamer, a bottle warmer and 3 bottle sets.. which is all you should need, buy the bigger bottle sizes straight away. apparently you should stick with 1 brand, we bought avent

nappy pooh bin we got has a flippable lid and takes regular bin liners... it doesn't smell at all.

No wall to wall carpets, carpets are disgusting. If you need to put a carpet down makes sure it's one you can take outside and get properly cleaned (which is almost impossible).

Baby monitor
Electronic thermometer
Stock up on new born nappies, 6 dozen or so for when you take him/her home
Good quality bum cream, bypanthem or similar
Stock up on wet wipes, 25 boxes, un-scented no alcohol
Baby changing station
Baby bath 1-2 months
Baby bath 3 to 6 months
Baby stroller with detachment for car seat
Bottle desteriliser
Bottle steam cleaner (microwave oven one works sweet)
Air humidifier

These are just the things I used, my wife can probably add lots more...

Gumtree.

Don't waste money on stuff the kid will grow out of in a couple of months.

Make friends with people with babies a little older than yours.

Congratulations!

I gather she will probably have a baby shower? You will get tons of clothes, burp cloths, changing pads and blankets at those.

My wife and I had very good experiences with the Baby Sense range - in particular the baby sling (most babies I know love to be carried and this way you free your hands while they feel pretty secure in a "womb-like" environment), the wrapping blankets (they are stretchy, so they secure your baby better) and the soothing-blanket (square shape cloth, very soft with little tags on the side for them to feel).

A baby carrier is also great - most of them allow you to fit the baby both ways - towards you when they're small, and towards the world when they are bigger and have developed good head/neck support.

My advice for pram shopping: the travel systems are great because you can put them in the car seat and then when you get somehwere, take the whole seat out and put it in the pram without waking them. I bough a Peg Pereggo in the US, but they are not that common around here anymore. Insist on folding the pram and pushing it around the shop yourself - and I would also suggest asking if you can put it in your boot to see if it fits. The infant chairs that comes with a base are nice - you mount the base securely in your car and clip the seat in and out of it.

In terms of the clothes - let her ask friends for second hand clothes. We got tons of semi new clothes for free from friends who had babies - you can save a fortune. And even though our son is a little smaller, they do grow out of the clothes pretty quick.

Don't take your most expensive nappies to the hospital - you will need them later on! WE got a pack of Pampers Premium as a gift (R2.50 or so a nappy) and used it in the hospital, which was a waste. Much better later when their poo turns runny...

For the nursery - get a nice mobile, get a mosquito net for over the cot (you don't want to see a baby with mosquito bites!) - it fills the room quite nicely in any case and many of them allow you to hang a mobile inside. We went for the wall-art idea - see http://www.ladala.co.za/ . It looks really great and everybody thinks we painted the wall. Best of all you can keep the base paint job if it is nice and neutral. Also, if your wife is planning on breast-feeding, get a comfy chair! We ended up getting a "Kevin" occasional chair from Coricraft for R2k, works well and looks nice. https://www.coricraft.co.za/CoriOnl...px?SC=Kevin+Arm+Chair&PC=occasional+furniture

Also, a dimmer or a lamp is a must for a nursery - you don't want to blind the kid at night (or worse, wake them up fully). I bought a lamp in the same colour-scheme as the room and fitted it with an Ellies rechargeable LED light. It points upwards towards the ceiling (so it doesn't shine into our son's cot directly), is not too bright (good for night feedings), comes with a remote (so you don't have to hunt for the switch on the floor) and is good for 5, 6 hours of use when the power goes out. Cost me R80 from Builder's Warehouse.

We have had good results playing white noise - once again Baby Sense has a good product. It is a CD with white noise and "womb-sounds" - heart beats, water gurgles etc. For that reason, a CD-player (or in my case, an Airport Express connected to an old mini-Hifi allows me to play songs from my or my wife's phone) is also a good idea.

I'll think of more!

Have a baby shower, you get a lot of stuff from friends and family. Our son is almost 7 months and we bought our first batch of nappies. all the others had been given to us. We have not bought any toys or other goods, we have been given most of our baby stuff by friends and family who have had kids before.

If you are comfortable on using second hand stuff, do so it will save you a lot of money now. babies grow out of clothing very quickly.
If you are paranoid, buy a baby monitor, if you are not then dont bother.
Breast feed, it saves you money, you loose any baby weight quickly and you dont have to worry about sterilising bottles the whole time. You dont have to run around the house in winter trying to warm bottles.
Dont listen to every ones advice as they all know what is best for you.
Dont believe every thing which is on the internet. This will make you paranoid.

Thanks Ockie for the congrats and all of you who offered advice and ideas so far. I directed wifey to this thread so she can also look at the suggestions. There are so many things already we have not thought about, so keep 'em coming! :D

The advice you've already received is excellent, so just adding my congratulations :)

OGrotekoning, congrats on the little girl! So awesome having a little baby on the way hey! We are currently pregnant with nr 3, and being a not so much faffing kind of mother, let me tell you what you need - off course it depends what your budget is, you can get every trinket on the market for babies(I find babies the most expensive, money making market around), or you can get what you really need. I will tell you what you really need.

Most important things for me is
* Car seat
*Baby carrier or sling( probably with first baby carrier plus pram)
*A good bum cream we use coconut oil and Vaseline as we use cloth nappies
*A good breast pump
*I find a dummy a life savior, but that is up to personal decisions
*Regular things like clothing, blankets etc
*Telament drops before feeds to help settle a immature tummy
*Gripe water - always found that works wonders

This is our 3rd child so I am getting the essentials. As you have kids you will realize you do not need that much! As I said, the baby scene has become a huge money making market, so be careful before you listen to everything you "NEED"!

I personally would wait till you had your stork tea, as everyone usually gives stacks at this time. Perhaps someone has a travel system available that you can have or get from them 2nd hand as they are so expensive and you use them for a short time. A regular umbrella stroller is nice from about 6 months on(Maclaren Techo XT for instance).

We just bought a great Maxi cosi carseat on Gumtree, for a fraction of the price it would be new, and it is in excellent condition!

Congrats!

All good suggestions here.

Obviously, buy the best you can afford but don't buy cheap - not worth it.

For pram systems, the Peg system that folds up like an umbrella works well - don't sniff at 2nd hand for this - I just sold a R7000 system for R1800 - cry for me, absolute bargain for buyer - it was in brilliant condition (even had all the original packaging)

Buy as much wet wipes as you can find on special (not the cheapo ones, decent brand) and as you have storage space for - you will be using those for next 3 years

Put a lazy boy in the bedroom for those late night feeds

Baby change station absolutely essential - buy a good one where you can keep all the powders, creams, nappies, etc to hand

Don't forget a baby bath

If you are paranoid, buy a baby monitor, if you are not then dont bother.

I would say buy one in any case. You can probably ignore the sensor pads and video systems etc. - but we've had good use taking the baby monitor along when we visit friends and you end up putting the baby upstairs or far away from the braai-area - especially with music playing.

Dont listen to every ones advice as they all know what is best for you.
Dont believe every thing which is on the internet. This will make you paranoid.

So true. Especially the advice from grandparents - a lot of research has come out in recent years nullifying most of this. Then again, we were raised with these advice and we turned out fine, so you'll probably only confuse yourself.

Also, the "mommies" on the baby sites are rather irritating and they tend to invent their own abbreviations and SMS speech for everything (sttn = sleep through the nigh, my "lo" = my little one, bf = breast feed etc.). Each and every one of them believe the answer for their "lo" will work with everybody - and it seldom does!

Just something I am sure nobody else mentioned.

Stock up on stuff for the house now as well. Will make the monthly expenses for the first few months to a year much easier to handle.

We started stocking up on the following when we decided to have a child:
Dish soap
Handy andy
Insect poison
canned food
any food we buy that has a very long shelf life (split peas, lentils, beans etc).
Laundry stuff, including soaps and softeners made for babies.
Bathroom stuff, shampoo, conditioner, baby soap, adult soap etc.
Garden stuff
Car stuff

It makes a huge difference when you go shopping especially as all these things go up in price anyway.
