Best gaming laptops in South Africa

Imported my laptop in June 2011, cost me 15.5k, customs, shipping and vat included.

a sager NP8170, 17.3" display, nvidia 560gtx, 750GB hdd, 80gb SSD, 2630QM (2.00 ghz quad core), 8GB ddr3 1600mhz and
a 750GB external 2.5 usb3 hard drive. all for 2k less than the cheapest model in this topic.

These laptops are way too heavy to carry around in any case.

I'd rather spend R5k less and purchase a high end desktop (that will outperform these laptops by a big margin) with a Windows license, screen, keyboard and gaming mouse.

If money was no issue, then what about the Alienware M18x Black @ R78,393 ? :D

Exactly. Why would anybody with a functional brain want to buy a laptop for gaming?

Well lets see, its a quarter of the size to carry around... plus a bunch of other perks.

just cause you can get muuuuch better in a desktop, doesnt mean it IS the best way to go.
 
Gaming on a 17' screen? That must suck.

I'm also not exactly sure why anybody would want to buy one.

You do know that Sager = re-branded Clevo.
And...
Mecer = re-branded Clevo (that specific model PH170HM) ;)

I was going to import a Sager...until I realized that we have them for sale locally :) (aka as Mecer...and comes with a 2yr warranty...which I'm pretty sure the Sager does not have in this country.)

It's good to have Canadian family in times like these, the local pricing on these laptops is criminal.
 
My OCD tendencies hate cabling and hate a big tower under the desk with all sorts of cables for LCD and 5.1 and peripherals running back and forth. I would absolutely love a gaming laptop for that and also for giving me the opportunity to game anywhere in the house but sadly I can't justify the price for the entertainment value. Also at my age now I can probably afford the equipment, but can no longer afford the time.

I will stick to an Android tablet as my "gaming laptop" and play pinball :p

I'd simply hook my laptop up to my 27"?

I plan on spoiling myself for my birthday with one of these - my current desktop is about 5 years old and definitely *not* portable. Which is important to me given that I split my time between two different houses and still enjoy "lanning" my otherwise online games.
 
I got myself the Lenovo y580 for christmas; Backlit Keyboard, 1080p screen, i7, GTX660M all packed in 15 inches makes for an amazingly portable gaming machine.

Speakers are brilliant, which is a major bonus, though I game with headphones.

The best part is that even after I put 16GB of RAM and an SSD in, it cost me inder R13k
 
I do prefer my desktop, but you can't beat this for portability. I go to a mates place almost every weekend and I don't always sleep at home every night. Quite handy in this case. Moving my desktop once a week would kill me.

If you're going to get the Alienware, find a friend in the US and get them to send it to you rather than getting it here.

I brought in the M17x R4 end of last year with 16Gb memory option, the SSD/Hybrid drive, bag/kb/cooling pad (cooling pad is a must, trust me) and it set me back about 25k. When I got quotes from local guys to bring it in, they were trying to rape me at 35k with no accessories.
