What's Ainol like in terms of firmware updates? Do they release new android versions, fast, slow, at all?

Yes, they do provide firmware updates and are one of the better (Chinese) companies in that regard

on the Android version upgrades it just depends on the device and specs

I still need to make a plan to come on by your shop and play with one of these babies...
 
I was actually just checking out that tablet earlier this morning - for me - a 10" is going to make sense for me.
If I can't get a Nexus 10, then I may wait till you guys get stock of this manufacturer's 10".

Will have to check if there's any ROM's on xda that may be compatible with the architecture of these units.

R1699 is very pricey for a Novo 7 8GB. They cost less than half that from China. Is this some sort of new model or something?

You can get it for R1200 from DinoDirect. I almost went with them when I had a 20% off voucher, which has since expired. Elsewhere it is $119 (R1070) but that ignores delivery costs and the risk of it not arriving... and possible duties(?).

R1299 is not bad at all.

The reason for the slightly higher pricing is because of the cost involved to get it here.
We pay duties on it and other expenses, also when ordering from China you would normally wait at least 2 weeks for delivery.
We ship out the next day as we have the items in stock.
Another reason is that if the device is faulty, you would have to send it to China at your own expense but when buying from us we deal with the manufacturer and costs associated.

Yea I agree R1299 is not bad at all. But that price was only for a few hours.
