Sansui 5inch Smartphone @ R1999,00

I bit the bullet and bought one. I am so glad I did. I really wasn't expecting much when I got, I just figured it would be okay until my contract expires and get a "real" phone on my next contract.

So lets gets started; The last phone I had was a Galaxy S2 so I'll compared my experiences with that. So far, I have only had this for 24 hours.

In the box I got 2x 2000mAh batteries and these batteries are huge.
I used the phone immediately after putting in my SIM card and the battery for 5 hours straight (Meduim screen brightness, 3G, Wifi, Gaming). before needing to recharge, Im sure the battery will last much longer today after a full charge.

The Screen is massive and does a good enough job. For a 2000 rand phone I am happy with the screen. The resolution is 800x480. You can actually see the pixels if you look closely. The colours look slightly washed but I'd imaging I'd be able to adjust colour saturation by find an app of sorts that can fix this. The screen is nice and bright on high settings. I've never had had a large screen and only after a day I am ready to say I dont want to go back to anything smaller. Whatsapp, Gmail, Webbrowsing all so much better on the 5inch screen.

The CPU is is a Cotrex A9 - A Dual Core 1GHz processor. Its works well, There is some very minor lag when opening the apps draw but hardly noticeable. I have not experienced and kind of lag in non-game apps. I have had the browser open on websites with lots of images and the CPU has handled the webpage well. The operating system runs well on this.

There is 512MBs of RAM on this. Again, I have had multiple non-gaming apps running at the same time and have not had any-problems.

The OS is Android 4.0.4, Ice Cream sandwich. This is okay for now - but worries me is how I am going to be able to upgrade this in future. There is an upgrade button in the settings, but I doubt sansui will be prompt with updates. I assume I am going to have to handle updates my self by rooting, which leads to the next problem. There is very little about this device on the internet which means there is going to be very little community support.

On the positive side, the OS is not bloated at all, it comes preloaded with twitter and face book and a Word/Excel editing app. All work well. The

The 3G modem is actually very good, I used to have al ot of trouble with 3G signal at my residence with my Galaxy S2 with it only being able to find EDGE at the best of times. With this phone I have HSDPA signal in most of my residence and its very fast. Nothing to complain about here.

GPS works very well and got a signal lock on faster than my S2. It has a lot of features for acquiring GPS signal faster such as (EPO, A-GPS) and it works. I was travelling along the highway using Navigation and at one point, it inaccurately but my on a side road, but it managed to correct it self after a minute or two.

The build quality is good, not the best but good none the less. Its feels solid and looks good.

The phone has dual sim cards which I haven't tried yet, but this is good thng for getting a data contract on sim and using a voice contract on another, or if you live in two location and one network has better coverage than the other or a third use would be if you have one number for pleasure and another for business.

Extras in the box include a pleather pouch. Extra battery, cheap earphones

Even though the price is now R2500, Its still a good phone for the price. I would recommend this.

Nice review. Sounds like a good phone especially looking at the specs and price. It's hard to find anything better at R1999 :)

Android 4.0 is fine as it stands.

Was going to ask.....

Same as the Hisense and virtually every other Chinese knockoff.

Except if you managed to get the Huawei Ascent P1 for R1999 at Edgars or CNA. It has 1GB ram works well and have a 1.5Ghz dual core cpu. That said its impossible to find the phone at this price now.

I have a feeling that was a once off clearance deal.... I would be surprised to see Edcon dumping stock at n huge loss only to order in again.

That's prolly the best sub R2k phone atm. There should be another special just around the corner.

How is the phone treating you? Are you still keen?

I still love this phone.

Think of it as a excellent low end phone.
I prefer it over my Galaxys s2.

BTW, the special just started again at HiFi corp.
Valid from the 7th to the 10th March.

I posted the thread in January about this phone, http://mybroadband.co.za/vb/showthread.php/499804-Sansui-Cosmic-Smart-Phone

The original Hifi Corp advertisement said it was a dual core Cortex A8, which can't be since that architecture did not allow for dual core implementations, and therefore I did not think much of this phone.

I read this thread and went ahead and bought one yesterday. It's for my mom, so I don't need the greatest resolution and RAM, I just need a dual core big screen phone.

First impressions are very good, and it's got a MediaTek MT 6577 1 GHz Dual Core chip. I read up on this and found a very easy way to root this phone, which I have done successfully tonight. The xda thread is here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1923764

The tutorial is overkill and long, you only need to download and install the following:
* MTK Droid Tools V2.3.9 http://ge.tt/2SmerWY/v/2
* Google USB Driver Rev 7 ( ADB driver ) http://dl-ssl.google.com/android/repository/usb_driver_r07-windows.zip

Look at the tutorial (http://www.mediafire.com/view/?mmm1xxb7vowi86v), I think page 15 to get the ADB driver working. Make sure that USB Debugging is checked on the phone, and also that the usb connection is “Media device” on the phone. Now you can run MTK Droid Tools and at the right hand bottom side there should be an active button which says ROOT or something like that. Click it and wait, that tool first makes a backup of the recovery and boot images and the file system, and then roots the phone, very easy.

Can confirm that this works... Thanks Broloks! Nice find...

The drivers are a bit tricky to get installed and it appears as if you are forcing an incorrect driver, because Windows gives a warning message, but it does work in the end.

How did you figure out what chipset is inside? All the info I got from the box was "Cortex A9 Dual 1GHz", anyway I just want to report that I this method works and I now have rooted device. Great stuff and thanks broloks!

Next obstacle is to find a Android 4.1 or 4.2 rom.

Here a news article saying that some MediaTek MT 6577 devices already have 4.1
