Does anyone know if Samsung tv's recognise a 3TB external hdd's? My tv (PS43D490) doesn't seem to pick it up at all.

It has no problem reading my flash drives and my 1TB external, but nothing happens when i connect the 3tb hdd. Having done a quick google, it appears to be quite common yet I didnt manage to find any solution.

The hdd has an external power source and is USB 3.0 (backward compatible with 2.0). Hard drive is a Seagate.

Any help would be greatful.

Thanks.

It has probably got to do with a limitation on:

a. The TV's OS
b. The TV's processor.

If it's the OS, Samsung might release a firmware update, otherwise you're buggered as far as I know.

Did you format the boot partition to MBR or GPT?

Didn't format it at all.. Loaded it up with 1.5tb of stuff straight out of the box. So i suppose however Seagate supplied it.

Thanks, perhaps its just better for me to take it back and get a refund then. Using this HDD on my tv is undoubtably the main reason i got it. And waiting for a new firmware, only to hope that they add support for it, could just be wishful thinking.

Just to add some more info, the hdd is NTFS (as is my 1tb external, which works fine) and, according to other sites i've found, partitioning the HDD doesn't seem to do the trick either..

I bought the same drive and my Samsung tv never picked it up.. Ended up buying the WDTV media player to use with it.

Managed to get this working btw. I partitioned the drive into a 1.85tb drive and a 900gb drive and the tv finds it. Sadly tho, it only picks up one partition (the 1.85tb one). So i suppose the 1.85tb is for audio/visual and the 900gb is for other storage.

Any suggestions on how to, perhaps, get the tv to pick up both partitions? I did try making them both primary but that made no difference...

Ok, never mind! It only seems to be picking up some of the files on the partition but not all! makes absolutely no sense to me. I changed the partition size to 1.3tb and it still only picks up some of the files.

Definitely a limitation in your firmware/CPU. At one point Windows wouldn't see a drive over 32GB, so I am guessing it's a similar problem.

Pity about this, I presume no solution yet? Will partition into 2 in the meantime and use I for vids and one for data as previously suggested.

This doesn't work. It will only find/play some of the files on the partition.

If you do find a solution, please share...

After making the 2 partitions a while ago, I watched a number if movies this weekend that were saved on the first (primary) partition without problems. I now backup to the second (logical drive) partition.

Maybe I am just lucky ...
