This is an invitation to all ISP reps on this forum. There seems to be alot of confusion over all the different ISP's AUP's and their shaping or throttling policies.

So I thought why not ask the ISP reps to enlighten us all and inform us on their throttling and shaping policies. Please no links to your websites AUP's. Just simple english (if possible).

I for 1 am looking for a new ISP and I need clear answers regarding the throttling that seems prevalent with ISP's these days(afrihost, axxess and most recently MWEB).

Good luck with that. AUP's are deliberately vague so that you can get shaped/throttled whenever the ISP's feel like it.

Do you know the difference between AUP (Acceptable Use Policies) and FUP (Fair Use Policies)?

Michael

This is a great plan but they won't divulge those details. Being as vague as possible is what an ISP does best.

@Nerf - I kinda had a feeling that no ISP would want to reply.

@Mikeygza - I do know the difference between the two. I did not ask for the difference between the 2 but merely an explaination in simple terms of the AUP and the throttling and how or when we (users) will fall fowl of them.

My reason for asking is because, for example, MWEB says that you will be throttled based on the average data downloaded for the month but users are being throttled after being with them for a week or 2. What happen to the months average?

My opinion on AUP's and FUP's is that they are just cop outs that ISP's use to hide behind. An uncapped product should be as such UNCAPPED. Otherwise call it what it is, soft capped. At least Telkom is being honest about their service in that regard.

I don't want policy, I want facts and figures of when I can expect to be throttled and not have it as a lotto. They are hiding behind policy to gain financially.

Maybe it is time to address these questions to Internet Service Providers' Association seeing as the ISP's themself are not making this clear.

If you don't want throttling and very little shaping get Openweb GOLD. You get what you pay for.

Doesn't the law prevent people from misleading the public through advertising? Cause right now it seems ISP's are selling Ferrari's but giving their customers Fiat's. You cant market something as uncapped when clearly if you try to use it as if it were uncapped you are slapped with an abuse email or better yet banned. Its no wonder we getting no replies from an ISP reps....

It would be nice if 1 rep said something, there must be 1 ISP with nothing to hide.

I would have thought MR Beep or WAJustin/WAJeff would have spoken up in here since Openweb clearly doesnt throttle and WA (once on IS) states the same.

I believe Telkom still has a throttle clause in their AUP, I know the day time rolling windows have been removed. Please correct me if I'm wrong on the Telkom throttling in the AUP.

I got a week to or so left to choose an ISP and the reps aren't helping

As long as the terms and conditions states 'unthrottled' or 'not throttled', I think that is the best you will get. Most ISP's protect themself via policy.

I think I'm gonna bite the bullet and go with Telkom, better the devil you know is what I think

This is not my experience with Openweb GOLD so far. The trial account was great (maybe 'coz it was over New Year's) but my torrents are shaped/throttled to death from early in the day to late at night; much worse than it ever was (~5kB average) for the whole time I was with MWEB (a year/two).

Uncapped means there is no actual bandwidth limit. The word uncapped does not mean all you can eat though. All SA uncapped products have some form of AUP or FUP on it.
You sign up, you accept the T's and C's that nobody ever reads and then complain afterwards. I'm guilty of this too:D

So after all this Telkom throttling uncapped and Rangers unwillingness to reply to any of the posts on the telkom uncapped thread, I'm now seriously F'd! I have two days to find an ISP before I'm plunged into the stone ages with no internet.

@Death - Uncapped should be just that simple, no limit, no letters, no worries. Imagine trying to stop that hefty guy gobbling up chicken wings and ribs at the "All you can eat buffet", telling him that he cant have more.... Good luck my friend LOL

Anyone tried BUZYBUY.com???

Their 2MB uncapped, non-throttled account is going for R249, so for ten rand more than MWEB's lame offering you dont have to worry about the 5GB uncapped soft cap
