For those who might be interested (i.e. who bought a MBP instead of MBA because it can be upgraded), I'm about to see if my decision was justified...

Just pulled the trigger on 2x4GB Corsair Vengeance DDR3-1600, that received some decent reviews. Will install it myself, and give a shout out on whether all goes according to plan...

Mid-2012 MBP 9,2 MD101LL/A (2,5 GHz) 13".

Had a couple of moments two days back where a badly-designed Hazel rule saw "Free" System Memory drop to 7,2 MB, and "Swap Used" peak at 31,75 GB... :wtf:

No amount of memory will fix that - and whereas I figured out what went wrong with the loop in Hazel (so as to not see a repeat) - the extra RAM will hopefully help things when I start with some serious PDF OCR'ing over the next few weeks... and will naturally make me feel better about not taking that MBA...

Upgrading my MBP mid 2010 from 4gb to 8 gb was the best thing I ever did. Made a huge difference for software development and it was dirt cheap. Got some kingston sticks from rectron. Just got a new MBPr with 8gb ram, wanted 16gb for future but it was R10k more that model. Going to miss being able to upgrade cheaply.

Has it already got a SSD?

Nope.

But can afford to wait for those SSD prices to become, well, more affordable.

I realise that too will make a massive difference - but not what I need just yet (or rather, not what I can justify spending, right now).

That Hazel rule loop stuff-up aside, where a SSD probably would've helped considering the "Swap used", the bulk-OCR'ing should (says my limited knowledge of these things) be complimented by a doubling up of memory, for R850,00...

And unless something has changed recently - doubt I'll be able to double my harddrive space via SSD for anything close to that price... :)

Here is a screen grab of what had me force-shutdown my MBP...

I don't know all that much about what this picture is painting - but I think I know enough to know it's not particularly pretty... Or maybe I'm completely wrong. [Joy]

Nerves are getting a bit frayed this side...

Package arrived yesterday - only managed to get round to trying the install today. Just started opening the screws - and, hello Murphy!

The very last screw, one of the 3 long ones, has decided not to play along. It's going nowhere. The tip of my micro-screwdriver has started fraying, as has the edges of the screw. It's now a uber-decision time: Buy a new set of microscrewdrivers, and hope that an unfrayed screwdriver will deliver the required bite to get the screw out - or drop everything, and get the MBP off to an iStore/Apple Reseller, and have them battle?

Thoughts?

Is it flush with the metal? If not I'd try use a pair of needlenose pliers to turn the screw. I'm not sure how long you are going to wait if you take it in.

No - it hasn't budged.

The first screwdriver did the initial damage (or rather, the genius using the screwdriver did the initial damage)... The others haven't fitted properly.

The attached (grainy) pic actually makes it look worse than what it is...

Hi Cassady

Sorry for that last one, hope you can sort it out. Just a question, where did buy that memory from and how did you decide on that make. I'm looking at getting the Kingston - did you look at Kingston as well?

That doesn't looked too stripped. I'm sure a more solid screwdriver will get it out.

Well it's stuffed now. Took it in, they used the Ifix toolkit, which is apparently the shizz - and nothing. It's rounded now - completely. Joy. Drill time.

I went for the Corsair Vengeance. Picked it up off Wootware - ordered on Thursday, had in on Monday. I know Kingston have a solid rep - so sure you will be fine going that route. Corsair has rave reviews on Amazon, so figured that at R859 to my door, worth a shot.

Of course, given the circumstances, I cannot tell you if it works or not... :(

Apologies - not sure if we are permitted to 'bump', but any experiences in repair with either of the above?
To get the stripped screw out? Wasn't it an iStore that destroyed the screw? A good quality screwdriver used carefully should still have been able to remove that screw. I have no experience with either of these places for repairs. Best ask them if they have the tools to extract a stripped screw. Your options now are to use a screw extractor or glue a small nut to the screw head, then use a socket wrench to get it out (we also used to just epoxy glue an old screwdriver to the screw head to get old, stripped screws out).

Will try the glue and screwdriver route - that might just do the trick. Thanks.

Saw a neat hack for stripped screws
Put a flat piece of elastic band on the stripped screw head and force the screw driver on the rubber - the extra traction should do the trick
