Government is considering raising the legal age to consume alcohol from 18 to 21, SAFM reported on Monday,

It reported that Health Minister Aaron Motsoaledi said 10 government ministries were working on measures to reduce harm caused by alcohol consumption.

Another proposal was that motorists could not consume any alcohol before driving.

Addressing a World Health Organisation (WHO) meeting on risk factors for non-communicable diseases, held in Boksburg, Motsoaledi said other measures to be considered included a ban on alcohol advertising and a review of alcohol pricing.

He commended the Gauteng provincial government for the changes it intended making to alcohol laws in the province, which could include not selling alcohol on Sundays.

The WHO said four percent of all deaths globally could be attributed to alcohol.

Motsoaledi said there might be a fight over the changes, but government was prepared for it, the report concluded.

Wasting their time with useless crap legislation that they cannot enforce.

Stupid. The current 18 year limit isn't working because kids as young as 10 are drinking. Someone should research the number of age drinkers before more time is wasted on this.

Idiots tend to think that changing laws fixes problems... if you're not enforcing them as they are, why would they be enforced once they change?

So... let me get this right. At 18 I can join the army/police and kill someone... but not drink. Okay... makes sense.

Exactly
They can make laws until hell freezes over, it doesnt help if you cant enforce it (or at the very least people respect the law, hence most people will follow it regardless of the level of enforcement)

"First they came for the smokers.... and did not speak about because I was not a smoker...." <-- play on that "First they came for the communists"

If the argument is that a law should not be created because criminals will break it. Why have law at all?

why not just ban it?
