I want to start drinking much healthier and go and try juicing fruit and vergetables.

I bought a Kenwood jug juicer a long time ago but the thing is useless and messy and it sits unused at the back of the cupboard. Does anyone have any recommendations for me. There is a big variety of machines out there.

My requirements:
Easily cleanable. Dishwasher safe.
Must be able to handle carrots.
Can be used regularly
Can make a batch at a time

Sounds like you are needing a blender more than a juicer.
If it is a blender you are thinking of, i use a Hamilton Beach commercial blender.
Anything you chuck in to the thing gets turned to liquid pretty quickly.

They dont come cheap though. I think around R3000. However, it will outlast and out perform most things out there over and over again.

You get two types of juicers, centrifugal juicer & masticating juicer

Centrifugal rotates at high rpm and basically cuts up the ingredients into very fine pulp spitting out the juice via centrifugal action and in the process introduces a lot of oxygen to your juice.
Masticating one works at low rpm and acts as a crusher squeezing the ingredients between rollers pressing the juice out and introducing very little oxygen. They are also more efficient. A higher up variant of this is the Triturating juicer.

You wan't the masticating juicer but they cost more.

I you want to juice then a must see is a video called "fat, sick and nearly dead". After watching it you will start immediately.
Buy the masticating, much more effective.
Contact me if you cannot find the video. Will give you a copy.

Oscar juicer costs about R3200. If you research juicers this is the one you'll go for.

I watched it yesterday on youtube. The lack of micro nutrients in my diet is why I want a juicer. That is one of the reasons I posted this thread today as I want to buy something that is recommended. I would much more like product videos or personal experience.

Can anybody recommend a good masticating juicer that is available locally?

The brands mentioned here http://www.aeha.org/ are pretty good. Finding them locally might be a problem but go look at the manufacturers website and see if they have a local distributor.

From that I've seen the Hurom available locally, expensive but comes with a 10yr warranty if I'm not mistaken.

EDIT: If you punch those brands one at a time into google followed by "site:.za" you will get results.

Might as well just get an Oscar as they seem pretty common around here.

I've got a centrifugal juicer and love it, but yes, it does decrease the shelf life significantly with the addition of so much oxygen. It also changes the flavour of many acidic juices to some extent and can even discolour things like apple juice. I drink the stuff immediately though so don't really care...

I can highly recommend the Hurom. I've had a Breville before, but the Hurom is much better.

Use the Oscar for about 2 years, great machine.

Blenders don't make great juicers to be honest. And a R129 blender isn't going to last long...

I don't know the brands to be honest. Apart from my Bamix...

You know that famous chef Gordon something something? He uses one of these. Bamix of Switzerland make the world's finest immersion blenders for home and professional use. The Bamix is certainly the most successful kitchen machine of its kind.

Hmmm, congrats on your purchase.

If you want to juice grasses and leaves to full on bags of apples or literally anything then the Oscar is the juicer - the main benefit is that the pulp is very dry and the juices are cold pressed- centrifugal juicers and other cheapies are quicker but heat the juice and leave a very wet pulp which is not what you want because the juice is still in the pulp nd you want a complete extraction as possible. If money is no object the best juicer is the Norwalk Press which leaves pulp literally bone dry. I use two Oscars and the best part is I can juice several shots of wheat grass in under 5 minutes and be all washed up and put away. It's easy to disassemble and a simple hot water rinse will clean. I've juiced bags of apples, - you name it it does it. the hassles are the mess - you get a juice container which fills up fast and the pulp is spat into another container at the same time you need to be ready to swop full containers with empties while juicing otherwise you end up with a puddle on the counter (well you willl anyway)I have them now 6 years and no problems and only last week did one of the strainers break but a replacement costs less than R300)
I just juice apples and all vegs because I dont want fructose (sugars) in my diet but apples in moderation are ok to sweeten the bitter stuff.

tl;dr the juicers made for the domestic market leave too much juice in the pulp. The best is the Oscar. The very best juicers are the hydraulic press which leave pulp as dry as sawdust. The Norwalk is one example of the best.
