Social media commentators on Monday rounded on the ANC and the SABC after new footage of Nelson Mandela was released showing a clearly ailing former president, despite the party's earlier assurances to the contrary.

President Jacob Zuma and high-ranking members of the ANC had visited Mandela at his Houghton home earlier in the day, accompanied by the SABC, who released "exclusive" footage of the visit.

ANC spokesperson Jackson Mthembu had released a statement shortly after the visit, saying that "officials are satisfied that president Mandela is in good health and is receiving the very best medical care".

President Jacob Zuma said he found Mandela "in good shape and in good spirits", adding that "...as you can see him, that he's really up and about and stabilised".

But the "exclusive" footage painted a much more worrisome picture, showing him with a vacant look on his face, and appearing to utter very few words.

As reported by AP, the SABC video shows Mandela in an armchair, his head propped up by a pillow, his legs on a footrest and covered by a blanket, looking grey-skinned and unsmiling with his cheeks showing what appear to be marks from a recently removed oxygen mask.

Zuma jokes and laughs with ANC officials, some Mandela family members and the former president's medical team while Mandela stares straight ahead, unresponsive.

Zuma tries to hold Mandela's hand but, given his lack of response, ends up covering it with his own.

"Smile, smile," Mandela is urged as one of his grandsons grabs a cellphone to take a picture.

Mandela attempts a weak smile but, as the flash goes off, he closes his eyes and purses his lips. Mandela is known to dislike camera flashes, as his eyes are sensitive after years of working in the glare of a limestone quarry when he was imprisoned on Robben Island.

Wow... was that really necessary ?

I swear they are going to embalm the old chap and drag his corpse out and show it off at major events.

Leave the man alone. Let him die in peace.

Shows us just that the ANC is clearly a 'reactive' organisation. I truly and honestly hope Madiba's last message to the nations will include something like "the ANC is not everything", vote for the best man for the job, etc

But clearly one can see the man is tired, and he deserves to be left alone, but no, the ANC will parade him whenever and where ever they can.

Just as a side note, do you think Mandela follows the news?

Honestly, I don't think he is fully aware of what is going on around him anymore. He doesn't look too fancy in that picture.

I don't think he is capable too.

Hmmmm...

No. He is mentally in poor health. He confuses people around him all the time (even close ones) and does not know who he really is. Apparently on occasion he has 'flashbacks' of reality but they become fewer and fewer - sadly :( Note how much he looks like a khoisan !

Stop playing on the computer and help him into bed, Graca.

Didn't he give him 1 million rand to help with his debts...?

Yes, which were discovered in 2006, the payments were made back in June 2005, also the time which Schabir Shaik made payments to Zuma. Others which also made payments in 2005 to Zuma includes, Khulubuse Zuma and Vivian Reddy and banks (not to be named) cancelled his bad debt against his name. The Zuma epidemic started back then, grew in power and now he is the Godfather of all corruption.

I am certain that Mandela feels ashamed today that he allowed the trust to pay Zuma 1mil to cover debt which was already written off by the banks. I wonder if these funds were ever taxed...

Think the little photo op has backfired on the ANC a bit.

That footage will come in handy during electioneering time if he is no longer around.

That's the thing it's not very good footage.

True. As much as that disturbs me though, the thought of that family profiteering, which they will, disturbs me more. Tours through the Houghton house... R10k, shards of the coffin... R25k. I put nothing past them.

Don't go giving the daughters ideas.
