Revamped Google Maps preview unveiled

No offline [navigation] mode. No go.

I'mo stick with my Navteq friends at Nokia Windows Phone.

Everything else (nice new additions and all) is trivial.

Offline or no go.

Or join the rest of us here in the 21st Century, we've got phones with internet, quite nifty ....

Unless you are a mozambiquan drug runner that needs maps when cellphones don't have signal

You can download a portion of the map and use it offline quite easily. And for free.

Offline maps are quite useful when you're stuck out in tweebuffelfontein with no data signal.

HUH? Google Maps has had offline mode for at least a year. What are you on about?

About offline maps
Offline maps lets you select and download certain areas in your Google Maps for Android app, so that you can view that area even when you aren’t connected to the Internet or a mobile network.

When to use offline maps
  • Traveling without a data plan: Download certain areas of Google Maps to your device for use in places without an Internet connection. Also great for Wi-Fi-only devices without a data plan, when you're outside a Wi-Fi coverage area.
  • Poor reception: Use offline maps in locations where you can’t get a good signal.
  • Don’t have unlimited data: Save on costs associated with accessing Google Maps on a mobile network by using offline maps instead.

Offline maps, while ok for us 3rd world users is kind of useless for where Google's really shine. Traffic, incident reports and Street View is unmatched.

Er, that would be a problem with ANY offline map service, as it couldn't be updated in real time to give you the current traffic info / incident reports etc. I still fail to see your point.
If you're saying your preferred maps service gives you these things while being offline, then you're getting outdated, and therefore useless info anyway.

How do I get is to help with my traffic? What app?

Turn on the Traffic filter, in SA thats ok I guess still needs more users to become decent.(Like I said 3rd world)

In EU and US its something else, it even recommends alternative routes when it detects major problems like accidents.

Well, I am on about offline navigation.

I thought that was pretty obvious.

Whats a map when you can't use it to be directed to where you want to go to, offline?

Offline use in Android means looking at it, zooming in / zooming out / turning the map around? Or am I missing something?

Well, I am on about offline navigation - actually.

That is the problem I have with the traffic thing. It normally will detect you are in bad traffic and shows this on the map...but never seems to reroute you via a alternative route to get you out of it or to even avoid it in the first place? It is a pity.

I think you are. Let me give you an example of how it works - recently went to Hermanus. Now I know how to get there, but I wasn't sure if I'd have good signal once I arrived, and I needed to be able to find my way around. So I saved the whole map of Hermanus as offline. Once there, I'd be able to navigate as long as I had GPS signal, without needing any Internet connectivity (i.e. offline). I'd also have access to a detailed map (zoom-able and with street names) even if I had no GPS.
As it happens this turned out to be unnecessary as the reception was perfect, so I was online all the time anyway.

It tells you that you are not correct that you can do offline navigation. It only looks that way, but, in actual fact, you need an Internet connection to find a route. The fact that there was reception made it look as if you were navigating offline. Those maps, when being used for navigation, will always be looking for an Internet connection.

They should call it Internet Based Navigation (not satellite navigation).

Your offline maps are just that - offline maps. Not satellite based navigation maps.

This PocketNow video illustrates the point more vividly:

They changed the settings to 'airplane mode' to simulate 'no signal'.
