So, i have a N40L, that I use as a server, so nothing special done to it, just added HDD's, and it was good to go.

One of my friends wants a HTPC, so I suggested to HPMS. but now he has a few questions that I cant answer ;p

  • First, i see the N54L still only comes with 2GB Memory, what type of memory does the machine take, we would like to upgrade it to 4GB
  • Secondly, the quote I got for the screen card is the ASUS ATI AMD Radeon HD 5450 Silent DDR3 low profile.

My question about the GFX card is, he uses a yamaha amp to connect to. So will this HDMI card be able to run 7.1 Surround sound?

And lastly, his TV is a 3D TV, if we put in a blu-ray ROM in the server, will it be able to run 3D movies, smoothly with this screen card?

Lastly, i saw some GFX cards needed to be plugged into the mobo's soundcard via SPDIF, anyone have any ideas if this card would need to do that?, coz the HPMS, does not have onboard sound, right?

Yes, the gfx passes through the sound via HDMI... but I'd rather for for a Nvidia card on the server. (I have 3 cards all ATI, wish I went NVidia for the Linux support)

I will have a look at the Nvidia equivalents. Thanks.

Just to make sure, if you say : "yes, the gfx passes through the sound via HDMI", what question were you answering?

Will it support 7.1?
It needs to be plugged im somewhere on the motherboard to enable the sound (SPDIF)?

And do you know if it will run 3D movies flawlessly?

Sorry, but of a newb on this ;p

It depends on the source media (mkv, etc) - but the sound will get passed through to the receiver over HDMI and 7.1 sound will work.

It doesn't need to be plugged into the motherboard.

I can play 3D movies on my setup fine.

(haven't tried anything with bluray though)

Why is the Micro server now so expensive I bought them for R1000 each ages ago?

Also be careful with the silent cards as the big heatsink might not fit.

I had to break quite a few pieces off the heatsink to make mine fit.

Thanks for everyones input and suggestions, and answers.

Can anyone elaborate on the memory upgrade? Then im set

Sorry for double posting, just browsed the net and saw this

Yeah, my post was wrong. Later I found every HD 5xxx supports HDMI 1.4a 3D (Frame packing). HD 5450/5570/5670 still lacks hardware MVC decode acceleration (any decent dual-core processor should be able to decode MVC). HD 5750 or higher supports it. A summary is in this table.

Im just wondering, is all ATI HD 5xxx cards the same, or can ASUS differ from another make?

running WHS2011 i couldnt see why not.

Great answers. Just bought a hp n54l and had same questions. Now just a good place to buy these things.

Do I need the remote access card. A graphics card will give me access to a monitor display and whs 2011 seems to have remote access functions.? Or must WHS 2011 need the hp remote access card?
