It's not cheap, not by a close margin. Costs will be absorbed, for the reason that it lightens [although not by very much] the load on the electricity grid.
The problem is that they need constant maintenance.... there's a very good reason why Eskom is essentially not very keen on doing this on a large scale.

As I understand it... this energy will be sold slightly differently.

They will basically get big corporates to purchase green electricity to offset their carbon foot print. So... it wont bring up the cost of electricity for everyone.. it will hopefully be subsidized by the big guys.
 
Well, the project costs R2.4 Billion and it will generate at least R2.7 Billion worth of electricity over 20 years (at a fixed cost of 60c/kWh). So it is a reasonably cheap source of electricity. But consider the increasing costs of coal/diesel/gas over the next 20 years and it looks far better.
 
no clean energy projects = poor credit ratings+ no world bank funding = we be fkt!
 
I heard that these things create noise pollution? Just curious.
 
This is not cool. Internationally this technology is starting to get into troubled waters because of the large number of birds that get wacked by these turbines. A flock of birds get chopped ... hundred goes in on the one side and 20 gets out on the other.

Other things kill a lot more birds than wind turbines. Power lines kill millions of birds, as do cars, cats, pesticides, etc when wind turbines kill only 1000s.

No. They're actually rather quiet.

You forgot about the maintenance.
Buying it is the cheap part. It needs around the clock maintenance.

Now I can relax about this. We all know ESKOM is just AWESOME when it gets to maintenance... :wtf:

They actually outsource their maintenance, and wind turbines would require trained technicians, so it would probably be different guys :p

All forms of electrical generation requires maintenance. In some ways its easier to maintain these as they are individual units.
