I have had Wireless internet for a while now, but decided to go over to ADSL, cancelled my wireless provider, and ordered the Telkom line, about a month ago! up do date no Telkom. Let me give you the backstory:

Move into current townhouses about 3 years ago, seems there was a problem with the one wall, so the previous owner broke down the wall, and rebuilt it. This is the wall where the Telkom Lines are suppose to penetrate the house. Seems there must be a box with cables on the side of the wall, with a few of them, leading into the townhouse. So what the contractor has done, was take of the box, BUT, the cables are still there, in a PVC pipe coming from underground (this is called the UG according the Telkom Tech).

When the Tech came to install the phone line (bout 2-3weeks ago), he saw that there is no box, and no cables running into the house, so he said it is out of his area of expertise, and will need to send someone to bring those cables into the house. Two days later, I phoned telkom on the progress, seems the message got lost in translation between all the concerned parties, because on telkom's system there is a comment that says, our townhouses does not have infrastructure, so new infrastructure will have to be brought in, but they dont have money for this project for this financial year.

I have phoned telkom numerous times now, they keep putting my explanation on the system, but after phoning again for a follow up, the same response is given to me.

My problem with this is just, there is clearly infrastructure, it is there, i can see it, i can even post pics here if someone with some knowledge wants to review them (pics of both mine, and the box that is attached to other townhouses in our complex). My neighbor even has a landline, this number has been given to Telkom to show that infrastructure is available.

Ok, so now the backstory is done, here is my question(s):

  1. Has anyone else had a similiar problem? and how did they get passed it?
  2. Does Telkom have a rep on MyBB, so that i can atleast try and explain my situation to someone that has some knowledge?
  3. And if this is going to be a endless fight, I was on screamer WiFi, but the price did not equal the service, what other WiFi service providers are available that I can look at? (would really rather want to go to ADSL though)

Do you know where the conduit (PVC) pipe that runs from the outside point to the inside of your house goes? I had the same issue and had to pull the telephone line from it's termination point inside my house though all the piping down to where the entry point outside the house is MYSELF. The Telkom Tech did help feed the cable from his roll but refused to do the job I did. I have the square outside box, though, it is just a general sealed electrical junction box that you can get from Builders.

Once the cable was pulled, the Tech joined it to the feed from the townhouse phone DB feed and ran the cable to where I needed it inside the house. My cable feeding was not that difficult since most of it was inside the garage, without a ceiling, and required me to only lower the table down the PVC tube to the termination points.

Mine comes from underground, but there is nothing in the house. Will take a few photos when im home and upload them here.

Currently there is no cabling inside the house, only that PVC pipe that supposedly comes from the UG?

Perhaps your house-plan has got electrical conduit details that shows where each one is? Otherwise, why not buy your own PVC conduit and wirebox (outside) and route it from where it comes up from underground to where you want it to enter your house? Will cost you about R200, including beer.

I am very bad at DIY :erm:

I will post some pics, if you will have a look at them, and advice, that would be nice!

I applied for a Telkom line last Monday (13th). A consultant contacted me within 24hrs to book a date (17th). The tech phoned me on the 17th and I met him at my house. He looked where the line would come in and we agreed the I had to remove some branches from some of my trees.
He left stating that he would reschedule for today (21st) I contacted Telkom with my reference number and the installation is indeed booked for today. Just waiting for them to contact me.

Give credit where credit is due. My line would have been installed in 5 days had I not needed to trim some trees. Kudos to Telkom (so far)

In Telkom speak it is called a "demarc"

DEMARC

See if you can find out what needs to be done on your side CPE ( Customer Premises Equipment )
then
See if you can find a private cabling company to do it for you -- to the Telkom tech satisfaction.
Should not cost too much ( seeing as you do not do DIY )

You tend to forget all the teething problems when everything is up and working.

// Maybe the solution is close at hand ?

Telkom tech was just here, he is gonna send someone tomorrow to check if the cables are "live" He is just scared that the rebuilding of the wall might have damaged the cables underground. If it is live, they can continue with the install :p
