Hi everyone,

We've recently had our ADSL line installed - living in a complex we've made a deal with our neighbours that they'll help pay the monthly bill if they can share access to the web.

We live on the ground floor and these neighbours live in the upstairs units( above us and then the one next to the one above us)

Our neighbour next door would also at a later stage want to share.

Which router would be the best buy? Seeing that the signal has to travel through the concrete slab to the upstairs units....

Not all that clued up with the tech stuff...would really appreciate your help

Budget wise : don't want to spend an arm and a leg but also not looking to buy something that'll have to be replaced after the first Jozi thunderstorm

Depends very much on the distance and how many obstructions are between the apartments. You may be able to get away with just using one router, I would suggest something like this dual band Tp-Link: http://www.dbg.co.za/product_info.php?products_id=889&osCsid=76g5u7fsbj262tlrug58k3o195

A bigger concern however is the actual sharing of the line, some ISPs may not be too happy with multiple households sharing the same connection. Also remember that the responsibility of upholding the terms and conditions of this agreement with your ISP lies with the whoevers name the account is registered in. If one of your neighbours has an affliction for illegal behaviour online the owner of the ISP account will be held responsible.

As far as I know what you're intending to do is illegal.

But I'm assuming you're asking for research and educational purposes (amirite? :D ) in which case get a router with four Ethernet ports and some cable. distribute the cable to each of your neighours. Once the cable is on their side they can either buy Wireless Access Points to distribute their portion of the line with their own security inside their unit

I'd rather seperate the powers of your requirements to a cheap ADSL router and then more pricey WiFi routers the neighbours can self-fund
I like these units

One caveat - remember the WiFi is only as good as the weakest transmitter,so if you're using a Micro USB WiFi dongle don't expect miracles, regardless of how strong the AP is transmitting

Thanks - we just want to create a secure wi-fi connection that only the ones who are financially contributing have access , i'll of course do the password setup etc so they can't give it out to other random people.

As for the affliction for illegal behaviour - there's a bigger chance of the Stormers winning this years Super Rugby Final than them having any illegal behaviour :D

Unfortunately "secure wi-fi connection" is a bit of an oxymoron, be sure to use WPA2 with a strong password and add an extra layer of MAC filtering if possible.

The fact still remains that sharing a regular consumer uncapped account between multiple households may be against the terms and conditions of the ISP, just be sure to check this before signing up.

Thanks , will do!

Hi There,
Sharing the connectivity may be illegal with the way that you are doing it. One possible way to get round that may be to form a partnership and register it as a partnership with CIPC. The partnership then enters into the agreement with the ISP. Yes there will be annual costs associated with the CIPC fees but that would be a legally viable solution.
As far as connecting the apartments together cable would be the best and most reliable option but then you will have the issue of getting the cable from one apartment to the other and this may go against the rules of your body corporate so I would also check with them.

I agreee with the views above of making wireless distribution the responsibility of each of the parties.

Regards

Tim

Best way that I've had this implemented is to use plc. It works well in a complex setting. Trick is to either get an electrician (or urself if you're not scared of a little zapping) to install a plug point directly next to each of your db boards. That way you have a very short cable distance and can get over 50mbps easily.

Some of these homeplug units already have wifi ap built in.

I have to find out which router my neighbour from across the alleyway and one floor up is using, because that thing is a monster. It swamps our apartment in signal. Does better than the router we have inside our place.
