So yesterday, I posted that my dad's ADSL was a little buggered. Could ping 8.8.8.8 but nothing else. Upon closer inspection, the DNS servers on his router had changed to 37.1.195.200 and 184.82.223.18.

Anyone know how this can happen or if his connection was in any way compromised?

Dlink router?

DNS on D-Link Routers
Low Impact

We have received reports from clients using D-Link routers with preconfigured DNS settings (possibly supplied by ISPs) that they are experiencing the following symptoms:-

Unable to browse the Internet or Send/Receive Mail
Able to ping IP Addresses and use Skype

This is most likely due to DNS being preset to the following IP Addresses: 37.1.195.200 or 184.82.223.18 . We advise affected clients to immediately change their router settings to obtain DNS automatically from our network. This can be done by either selecting “Enable Auto DNS” or “Obtain DNS from ISP” options, or changing both primary and secondary DNS settings to 0.0.0.0 where no option is available.

We will post more information and resources as they become available via our social media channels.

The cause of the issue is still not fully known, but is external to Afrihost’s network and services. All clients using D-Link routers are strongly encouraged to ensure that their router DNS settings are set to obtain DNS automatically or dynamically from Afrihost’s network.

The same thing happened to my router D-Link 2750. Before the router was set to get DNS from the ISP (automatically) then last week I coudn't open any web pages, yet my torrents were still downloading. Found that my DNS was changed to 37.1.195.200 and 184.82.223.18. I set it back to get DNS from ISP and all was well again.

Still irks me how this happened without anyone changing it.

I'm curious as to whats at play here. There was another user on the Telkom thread who had the same thing happen to his D-link
