Before I call Telkom and try to talk myself past 5 lines of support, I wanted to see if others have had experience with this sort of issue.

For the past few days, I've had big lag spikes, as shown in the trace. I haven't examined enough to determine if it's due to congestion, but it doesn't exclusively show up during peak hours so I'm doubtful.

Code:

So, if you've experienced this before, are Telkom support equipped to investigate traceroutes? Are they likely to make me buy a new router? Does there happen to be someone here who works for Telkom and can look at that exchange? :) If it helps, I live in Ladysmith, KZN.

Thanks

Could be related to the DSLAM backhaul capacity.

Try the Telkom guest account and do a traceroute to the the telkom site telkom.co.za in order to eliminate ISP issues.

Thanks for the tip. I tried the guest account, and the second hop looks good, but the 3rd router doesn't let me trace any further.

Code:
                             My traceroute [v0.82]

 3. ???

The issue is intermittent though, so I'd have to run a longer test to be sure. I share this line so it'll have to wait for a quiet moment. I might even get a cheap local prepaid account for testing.

Cheers

You seem clued up :)

Bear in mind that u sometimes also have to let the account be connected for an extended period of time before the (telkom) problems start.

Noted. This one does seem to show up immediately after a router reboot, but something somewhere could be remembering.

Right now it's doing something else again. Second hop is good, but there's 270ms between it and the next hop. That definitely has nothing to do with my exchange -- it's between 2 IS devices, though admittedly they could still be hosted on the Telkom network -- so I'll keep poking Openweb.

Can you do a "ping -n 100 "ip" of your 2nd hop?

I'm not sure where Ladysmith connects through, but it's not impossible that it goes through PMB, or you're experiencing the same issue we are. But all areas in and around PMB are experiencing congestion at the moment.

Maritzburg, ladysmith, newcastle are all major dssu sites that act as feeders for smaller sites. They major sites work back to durban & new germany.

Thanks for the posts. Your problem sounds about the same as mine Denouncer.

I opened a case with Telkom, which they promptly closed without doing anything, so I sent in an escalation form and am now waiting for a response. Will call them tomorrow or on Tuesday if I don't hear anything.
