Have no doubt that there exists exchange congestion. Even with a 4mb - youtube videos have begun to pause whilst it buffers.

I don't think it's your exchange - don't know about the pausing aspect, but You Tube video problems seem to be universal.

From Australia, (but I've read about issues on US forums as well) :

Is it just me or has YouTube become extremely slow on BigPond recently?
Most of the time even 360p doesn't load properly and has to buffer all the time.
My speed everywhere else is fine though.

I'm more angry with the fact I can I can't rewind/skip ahead any previously buffered section without the entire video clearing its cache. SERIOUSLY?
Yeah, Google went full retard this year.

And their speeds are a lot faster than ours.

Btw, I'm only on a 1Mbps line via the Theesecombe exchange (Exchange Code : ETCE02 ; checked over here http://www.broadbandstats.co.za/) and generally able to get 360p vids playing without much of a problem.

Hi guys.

Im in lorraine also connected to theesecombe (041 379 xxxx). Last 5 days speedtest is telling me 300+ ping , 0.40mbps download 0.35mbps upload on 4 meg!!

All these tests where made to SAIX servers around SA

Telkom tell me that the exchange looks congested... can you test Baycityroller?

Thanks:)

I only had issues at night in the past few days in Walmer.
Otherwise it is running fine during the day.

I've just done this test - also on 041-379-xxxx , not in Lorraine, but not far away at all.

I used SAIX CPT server to test, while logged into @lantic.
Feel fortunate, and hope congestion doesn't accelerate elsewhere.

You should also download a 20 - 30MB podcast - I think that might give a more accurate indication of your line speed. I feel I know mine is working optimally when it settles at around 106 kbps, which up to now is the vast majority of the time. Hope this has been of help.

I'm in the Lorraine area as well but connected to the Chatlo exchnage. and i have been told by my ISP that the exchange is very congested. I have a 1 meg line and during the day the normal ping is about 80 to 90. But from about 16:00 it starts climbing to an average of around 200. this is around the time the people get home and everybody gets on the internet.

I usually get around 1.7mbps during the day with 202ping or so.

After 6 it changes to around 0.40mbps and 550-800 ping.

2mb line.

Telkom moved me to another dslam on theesecombe exchange, ping to cape town saix is 613ms on 4mb line. Doesnt even complete up or download test. Technition to advise me further tomorrow. Hope they fix this soon : :(

I'm in the Springfield area with a connection of a 2 Mb line however at least 10 times a day the connection drops and sync's to a 512 KB/1 MB connection. I've spoken to Telkom about it and there excuse is that the exchange is congested and nothing can be done about it!

Reviving this thread as heading is relevant.

Believe I was on the Theesecombe exchange until very recently - today even ?
Logged a fault this morning at 10h30, as my ADSL's been dropping connection randomly a few times a day (last few weeks) - very helpful Telkom rep. on 10210 said he'd suggest to them I be moved to the upgraded exchange in Charlo (VDSL one).

About 45 mins. ago, got a call from a tech. who says everything should be stable by 8pm tonight, and that I'm now on the Charlo exchange.

Can anyone in PE confirm if this amounts to a mass exodus of people from the one exchange to the other, as tech. mentioned nos. starting with my prefix are / have been moved over, or in process of being so.

Please advise if you know more ?

Just hope stability improves from now on - was getting really bad recently, day or night with ADSL disconnecting frequently. Been stable since he called ; I wasn't asked to reboot modem / router, which seems strange.

Yes, it is correct.

Some of the Theesecombe users will be cut back to Charlo, as well as some users down Lovemore Park way.

Thanks, MickeyD.
By 'cut back' do you mean 'moved across' (the way I look at it, anyway) ?

ADSL line now seems stable again, but only time will tell. I've no idea if I've in fact been moved over to the Charlo exchange, so would need to confirm with Telkom.

Problem now is that when I check the modem stats, my actual Downstream rate has dropped to 1,536 Kbps from 2,048 (which I recorded yesterday morning, still apparently on the old exchange).

Also, Downstream attenuation remains the same at a high 54.0 dB - this was one of the reasons I wanted to move to a different exchange, as previous one was almost 5kms away, apparently.

Next step I think is to request Telkom to Recreate the Port / do a Port Reset.
Any other ideas ?

In my experience that is normally related to copper quality and or distance to the exchange.
IF it sync between profile speeds you will need to reset pretty often or drop the speed down to the next tier.
My 4mb connection can only do 3mb and be stable.

In true Telkom style, got through to the same agent as yesterday who claims the original ref no is still open on the system, but my fault was closed off on a 2nd ref. However, I've only ever received one ref no from him & on the same one they seem to have closed it off via SMS yesterday afternoon.

Be that as it may, it's now been escalated again as he says I'm still on the original Theesecombe exchange - so call from techie yesterday meant nothing in so far as moving across to Charlo was concerned.

The agent has now reset the port or whatever he did to get me back up to 2,048 , but Attenuation still at 54,0 Down, which makes sense as I've not moved from the original port / exchange.

The saga will continue again today, I suspect ...

:mad:I have a 4 Meg line and am located 750 m from the new (Feb 2014) DSLAM outside the garden section of Builders Warehouse. The last few weeks it has been down nearly every day and sometimes several times a day. The problem is that my Netgear DGN2200v4 router does not indicated line failure, only the screen toolbar does so. It was down again this morning and I spoke to a local Pharmacy whilst I was in there who advised that Telkom cant provide him a date when it would be fixed. He frequently is unable to submit claims to Medical Aid and has had to upgrade his PABX and alarm systems to accommodate this DSLAM.
