People driving with earphones in their ears

Whats the general rule around this? Everyday I see dozens of (especially younger folks) driving with earphones in their ears.

Isn't this a bit hazardous when somebody is trying to get your attention by hooting or something?

yes it is stupid and dangerous. But unfortunately the world is filled with stupid people.

some people can't afford a car radio
 
It might be distracting their attention, but then how do you get a deaf persons attention? They certainly wouldn't hear your cars horn.
 
There is little difference between driving with earphones or radio banging away at full throttle ... except you don't annoy the people in other cars with your music when you are trying to listen to Nicky on RSG
 
I think it's just a stupid thing to do. Deaf people don't have a choice, but if you have perfectly good hearing why would you want to block off a sense that could potentially prevent a fatal accident or could hinder emergency services in their duties (by not hearing sirens).

Same thing goes I guess for those people that pump their music so loud they can't hear anything else anyway.

And what if these are being used to field a phone call, would you rather have them driving erratically with one hand on the wheel/gear stick/indicators? FYI I usually use only one earpiece when fielding a call :)
 
Some people like listening to loud music.
It does not hinder anyone else.
That is BS.

If you are an unaware driver then nothing will change that.

Cycling with headphones is also not dangerous unless your a chop.
Long cycles need music.
 
I see runners and cyclists doing this all the time... its worse than being deaf as the music will distract you as well.

Not bright.

bla bla bla, i see more idiots in cars than on bikes but thats a whole other discussion.

I use headphones to block out the windnoise mostly

I only ride/run with one earphone (and the music on mono ;) ), that way I can still hear traffic.

Very true. Traffic officials really don't care about stopping you for other illegal activities, I doubt they would fine you for wearing earphones.

Instead of doing proactive work, most of traffic cops like to hide away and bushes with cameras. Grinds my gears that.
