Durban - Bartenders, welders, petrol attendants and labourers are among the candidates who have applied for Terence Nombembe’s position of auditor general, it was reported on Wednesday.

Among the minimum requirements for the job are a Master’s degree and several years of auditing and accounting experience, but this hasn’t stopped many of the unqualified hopefuls from applying, The Mercury reported.

Nombembe’s term of office expires at the end of November.

The committee has shortlisted six people who are to be interviewed next Wednesday.

Nombembe’s deputy, Kimi Makwetu, is at the top of the list.

Advocate Nonkosi Cetshwayo, who heads the Office on Institutions Supporting Democracy in the National Assembly, said the 90 applicants had to be divided into an “A list” and a “B list”.

“The A list is the reflection of all the CVs received, but in a summarised version. If you look at them you will see we received CVs from a whole lot of people ranging from matrics, labourers, welders and the like,” Cetshwayo said.

“As the secretariat we then looked at the list with an attempt to assist and facilitate the shortlisting by the members and we came up with the B list, which is made up of six candidates.”

Just apply even if you don't meet the minimum requirements... love it.
 
People are desperate for jobs and will try their luck with anything. This happens for all government jobs, 1000s of applicants for anything and everything. They are desperate for any job, no matter the qualifications.

Some of the requirements are set too high, and the person appointed in some cases does not meet those requirements anyway.

not just government jobs. I advertised within the bank for senior Tibco engineers with at least 5 years experience plus knowledge of Linux admin and the ability to speak sql and tcp. Most of the applications I got in response were from tellers.

tcp, meh.. who needs that :p...

I can pretend to have 5 years tibco experience if it makes you feel happier though?

Yeah.. I've done it before.....

But not meeting the advertised requirements, such as me having a degree and them wanting an honours degree.. or wanting 5 years experience, and me only having 2....

Not even vaguely meeting the minimum requirements, such as wanting a Masters degree and never having been to varsity...
 
So you would apply for a job that is 10 pay grades above yours?
Really?
That's just embarrassing.

And a total waste of time for the employer.
Unless you feel you are qualified based on experience then that's a different story.

Last year we advertised a position for our small business and got a poor response. One of the candidates had zero experience in our industry. Funny that was she was shortlisted and our 2nd choice as she had balls. Then again the person who we previously employed also had zero experience but had balls and convinced us she had what it took - and she did and moved on to a more senior role in record time.
 
Did you have the experience to backup the position?
As I stated, that's a different story.

I am involved with interviewing certain prospective candidates in my company as well as testing them.
The cv alone will not get them to me.
If they have qualifications then they still do an assessment before even getting to the interview stage.

The assessment is setup by myself to gauge pretty quickly what they know and don't know with regards to the position.

They could have 20 years of experience or 1 month.
If they pass the assessment then I will interview them regardless.

This is what wrong with South Africa you get the job and dont evans meat what is required!!! I hate the BEE. here I must work my but off to get qaulified and you just get the jobs

Bit of a difference between trying for something that you're a little under-qualified for and wanting to jump from being a welder to the Auditor General...
 
Now why did she get the job and I never do get it when I apply then the people just say I dont meat requirments
