The Imax Returns to SA: launch details

Has the old cinema been redeveloped into shops? Been ages since I've been to that side of Gateway.

Don't think so. Didn't notice any new shops in that area the last time we were there a few weeks back.

Nope. It was Old Mutual - who owned Nu Metro - that canned it.
And the description of the renovations is the description used for Digital IMAX. Its much more detail than normal theaters, but it will never be the same as classic IMAX. Most critics complain that they do not distinguish between Classic and Digital IMAX and charge the same fee. But you will notice the difference once you've seen the real thing.

Still going to use it when it comes out, but won't be rushing off to go and experience it.
 
Ster-Kinekor announced in a press statement issued on Tuesday, 3 September 2013, that has completed an agreement with Imax corporation to install an Imax theatre at Ster-Kinekor Gateway by November 2013.

They're removing the current screen and replacing. It also says that Imax is moving away from 70mm film (well everyone is moving away from film). I quite understand it, it clearly was unsustainable or Nu-Metro wouldn't have given up on it.

Digital IMAX isn't real IMAX. It's much smaller than the original 70mm Film and much lower quality. They shouldn't even call it IMAX. It's LieMAX

Wanna bet the Gauteng IMAX will be in PTA and not in Jozi? Most likely Menlyn again (or do they have Nu Metro?)

They could replace the Pavilion screen at Emperor's and convert that to IMAX.
 
Yes!! PTA would be great... The old IMAX at Menlyn was on its own, not part of the Nu Metro cinema complex - and its still there last time I looked so hoefully it could be renovated quite easily.
