Hi guys

Well, we have 5x TV's and want to set up 3x of them to watch seperate DSTV channels and maybe in the future all 5x of them. We currently have a HD PVR 2P decoder and another decoder but I'm not sure which one it is. If I understand correctly one can watch 2x different channels using the PVR, so how do I connect the other TV with the decoder and do I then need to get the "eye" in the other room, or another decoder? Is it connected through the RCA's (yellow, red and white ports) or how? Here's a pic that might be useful for an explanation:

And how do I connect 3x or even 4x TV's be able to watch seperate channels? Do I need 4x decoders or "eyes" or how?

Would I also need to get xtra view? And if I do, do I need to pay only R70 extra even though I'll connect 4x extra TV's and not just one, or is it R70 per TV?

No offense, but with the knowledge you displayed in your post, i would not advise that you try to DIY this one...

With xtra view you can only connect two tv's with two decoders, one as primary and the other as secondary. The other tv's you would need another contract and the same setup, so two DSTV subs + two xtraview subs.

Research what Xtraview options are available & decide which you want, you might also want to find out what your other decoder is. Then find an installer in your area ;)

If you must try it yourself this manual should be self explanatory.

However IIRC the maximum number of viewing environments you can have is 3, using an SD PVR and an HD PVR, the HD PVR by itself can only view one record one (the 2P, I think the previous HD PVR's could record 2 watch 1)

Ok so from what I've gathered one isn't able to view 2 channels at once on a HD PVR. So I'll need to get another 11xx decoder and pay R70 a month for xtra view and connect it that way. Then I'll only be able to watch 2 different channels on 2 seperate TV's at the same time.

So then, how do I connect a third TV, with it being able to display the same channel viewed on one of the two TV's which is able to watch seperate channels? Like a third TV that displays the same channel that's currently being viewed on the HD PVR? Will that be through the composite cables or through the LNB cables?

I've seen at my friends house that his parents have a TV in their room, but the decoder is in the lounge. They just have an "eye" in their room, when they change the channel in their room, it also changes in the lounge. This is the type of setup I'm looking for.

Here's how it should work:

The HD PVR is in the lounge connected to the main TV. now, my dad wants a TV in his room, whatever channel is being watched on the HD PVR displays on the TV in his room as well.

Then I get a 11xx decoder and put it in my room, connect it with xtra view and I'm also able to watch whatever channel I prefer.

So 3 TV's, two of them being able to watch to change channels without affecting each other, and only 2 of the three connected to the HD PVR and affecting each other when channels are changed.

Such a simple thing yet it feels so difficult to explain :wtf:

I have 3 TV setup.
Xtraview and pvr.
1 TV with pvr
2 TV with xtra view and whayever TV 1 is watching
3 TV can watch TV1 pvr and TV 2 xtraview.
No idea how it was setup.

Hi.
Maybe this will help.

The maximum number of viewing environments you can have is 4. To get this, you would need an SD PVR as well as the old HD Pace PVR (Not 2P). In this way you can have 4 different viewing environments and you are able to record on all 4. What you need to understand is that you will only be able to get 2 HD viewing environments and 2 SD viewing environments.
If you have the 2P HD PVR and SD PVR you can get a max 3 viewing environments. 2 SD and 1 HD.
Likewise if you only have a 2P HD PVR and another Single view SD PVR, you would only get 2 viewing environments. (1 x HD and 1 x SD).

For all of these Xtraview environments you would only pay an additional R 75. (it doesn't matter if you have 2/3/4 viewing environments)

I hope this helps.

No, the old HDPVRs are view 1, record 2

The only "view 2" device is the SDPVR (not considering dual view cos its not XV compatible)

AFAIK the max channels you can watch at once is 2 as the LNB on your dish can only pickup two signals. If you want to be able to watch more you will have to go with another dish installation.

So yes you can have internal setups where you can watch DSTV on x number of TV's but only 2 channels at once. I may be wrong but that is how I understand it.

Same here...

My setup gives me 3 viewing environments.
I have a SD PVR and HD PVR.
I get 2 x SD channels that work independently as well as my HD channel that works all on its own.

BTW, you used to get the old HD PVR that allowed you to get 2 x HD channels and if you connected it to an SD PVR you were able to get 2 x SD channels as well.

Multichoice still sells these for around R 3k

BS

Some shocking advice. Tremayn knows what he is talking about (by agreeing with me) and Smurf knows more than most installers :D

With xtra view you can only connect two tv's with two decoders, one as primary and the other as secondary. The other tv's you would need another contract and the same setup, so two DSTV subs + two xtraview subs.

You can also connect all 5 TV's to the 2 XtraView decoders. This only gives 2 viewing environments in most cases.

If you must try it yourself this manual should be self explanatory.

Good luck with that :)

The dish is not the limiting factor. It is the XtraView setups allowed by DStv... You can easily run more decoders from a twin LNB, using a multiswitch.

My setup gives me 3 viewing environments.

This is the most viewing environments you can get, but unfortunately SD PVR's are not sold anymore. You may be able to find one secondhand.

There was never a dual view HD PVR. Only a dual record, but one viewing environment.

I had a setup with extra view and remote blasters.
But it still only meant 3 channels in total.
2 view, 1 record.

The most you can get is 3 viewing channels (2 SD and 1 HD) and 2 recording channels (1 SD and 1 HD) by linking a SD PVR and an HD PVR via extraview. Only problem is that multichoise no longer sell the SD PVR (You can sometimes get hold of a second hand one on bid or buy but people charge like wounded buffaloes for them)

The set up is really complicated and the first 'dstv approved' installer that connected mine couldnt get it right so he had to get an 'even more dstv approved' installer to help him so i wouldnt try it yourself if i was you.
