Hi guys,

Recently decided i should look into a decent pair of gaming headphones (and a new mouse since mine died but thats a different story)

The highest end pair of headphones i've had must have been a set of skullcandy TI's of which 3 broke. I later made my own headphones which sound much better but are far from comfortable..

the two that have caught my eye are the Sharkoon x-tatic SP plus and the Sharkoon X-tatic S7

Yes, they are probably completely in different leagues. My main concern is the strength of them. Ive had a few sets of headphones break on me (all of them at the point where you can extend the ear pieces)

Also, Is 7.1 audio better for gaming. Is there that much of a difference between 7.1 and stereo on headphones? Is it worth almost double the price?

If i opt for the S7, will i notice the difference between analog and running through the optical input?

Lastly, yes these will be used for movies, music and other audio tasks ;)

Thanks!

Possibly the saddest thing I've ever heard. :D

Yes, mostly for FPS games though. It's only worth double the price if the headphones make good use of it.

I don't know anything about Sharkoon so I can't comment further, I have these ones which are extremely comfortable and do the job just fine for me: http://www.takealot.com/gaming/accessories/cm-storm-sirus-s-true-5-1-surround-sound,27408703

Those CM ones look quite decent. I have the Razer Tiamat headset, the stereo one, not the 7.1, but I find them very comfortable and the sound is very decent. I'd go for the ones nomnom has though if I were you.

Thanks guys!

Turns out... The Sharkoons arnt true 7.1 just emulated. :/ for an extra R600-ish bucks I could get The true 7.1 headset but IMO I don't game that heavily.

I actually thought of getting some CM ones. the only thing that does bug me.. is id like a removable mic. I guess it does fold up which is nice. The price isn't too bad.

Busy watching a review on them quick

Any ideas on some decent gaming mice for under R500? this is what I was looking at.

It depends on what you like, It has an adjustable weight system which is good. Don't know the brand at all, but it seems decent, 5,000 dpi is certainly more than enough as well.

It will be slightly over your budget but try and get a Logitech G400, very decent mouse.

If you decent on the CM Sirus, get it from Takealot as they are the cheapest.

NGR Computers are in Durban North so shipping should be around R59 for you.

Was looking at ordering through sybaritic, but since Takelot will do free shipping on the Sirus i might as well order from them. I was going to get the one without the "tatical control unit" but I dont have a decent headphone amp, nor do i have a decent sound card. So the one that comes with the little control unit (with built in sound card) is probably best.

The G400 is nice, However.. I love having buttons on the mouse. The Drakonia has an extra 2. (so far i use one button for knife and the other for grenade, 2 more will definitely come in handy!)

Dont think ill even run it at 5000dpi. 1600 is awesome, and im keen to try out a bit higher than that. Done a few reviews and the likes and it seems like a good buy.

There's a newer version of the Drakionia which id love to get, Seems like they are only available in Germany though :/ 8000dpi is pretty hectic :|

Thanks once again :)

Edit: This is what I am currently using... Only reason it needs to be replaced is because the scroll click has died on me.

Edit 2: will also be grabbing myself some CM Extreme Fusion F1 Thermal paste. according to This its pretty good

Don't mean to hijack your thread but I'm also in the market for new gaming headphones. Anyone able to recommend any brands/models for under R500? Would prefer a foldable mic.

Virtual 7.1 or 5.1 or emulation as you call it works fantastically if you have a high end sound card. I have the Asus Xonar Xense which uses a stereo headset from Sennheiser. Best sound I have had... But it was not cheap ;)

I had 7.1 headies for fps. was ok, but everyone recommend Sennheiser. So for now on my budget it is Asus Xonar DGX & Sennheisher HD439.

The Sennheiser PC350 that came bundled with my Xonar Xense are doing a great job imo. I know there are better sets that will compliment my Xense, but I'm happy enough with the 350's. They are by far the most comfortable cans I have used.

Perfectly fine, If somethign really good got mentioned for you id be able to recommend to someone else ;)

Get yourself a Steelseries V2! the sound is nothing you have every heard in this world! Its circumaural headphones which means outside noises are completely eliminated!

I did have a look at them not so long ago. My problem is as much as id love to have noise cancelling, I also go out and LAN at my mates house and when we do (and im wearing something that kills all ambient noise) we cant communicate :/

I actually made my own headphones out of some decent small drivers and a good set of ear muffs (the ones for workmen) and those cancelled out quite a lot of noise and were hell of a uncomfortable...

I did have a look into this route actually... But cheap sound cards are a waste of time arnt they? I could even go for the Sirus that doesn't have the control unit and run it in 5.1 off the card below? The only problem is some people have said that the inline control on the Sirus s is to far up the cord... :/

If i do grab some Sennheisers, What should i be looking at? with a mic maybe... or even a detachable mic? like a lapel mic (i think its called)

That DGX isn't too badly priced :) guess ill be doing more review delving after work :/

Okay so ive done a bit of reading while backing up a pc here at work.

It comes down to this:

I either get the CM Storm Sirus with the tactical control soundcard puck like thing

Or i spend a bit more on a sound card (has to be PCI-e) and a set of normal stereo headphones.

So the things that out rule the Sirus:

Possibly not as good overall audio quality (not a huge concern as i do have some other DIY headphones that do work)
Will probably have to have that tactical control thing on my desk and take it to lans...

things that out rule decent sound card + decent headphones:

Price, Likely more expensive
Would like to get away with not having an extra card in my pc as it is a mod.

So it looks like im going for the Sirus headphones (despite some other very good recommendations)

Now i'm just waiting for Graeme to see if he can get me the Drakonia black :D (ordering from Sybaritic as they actually work out to the same price for the Sirus headphones.)

Thanks guys!

Strange that no one else recommended the Corsair Vengeance 1500, take a look at that and see if you like it.

Review

Review 2

Those look really good! theres actually a V2 out now / about to be released.

Couple of other people have mentioned that the Sirus tops the Siberia v2 and the corsair 1500. IMO the Sirus with its ability to run the headset via analog or usb is pretty neat for if i do decide to use the headset say on my phone or something.

If i could id go for the Corsair 2000 :)

Edit: didnt see the reviews until now

Edit 2: So the corsairs look really good and apparently preform.. they just lack when set to 7.1 mode. Back and front audio in games dont preform very well..

Also in my review searching the cups on the Corsair 1500s are tight on most reviewers ears. on the other hand... the Sirus is apparently a little too loose. (as in bending down would possibly end up in them sliding off.) Not too much of an issue as gaming doesnt require swinging ones head around like a crazy chimp. unless youre one of those gamers :P

Thanks for the extra option :)

It is true that the Sirus is a little loose, but only a little, so if you look at something on the floor while you have them on, they will slip a little.

I like the fact that I can take off the ear cups and cushion on the head band and wash them. Also you have the option to choose between leatherette (fake leather) or cloth cups, I like the cloth cups.

I think the cloth cups will be the better option ;) those leatherette will get sweaty and annoying...

The loose fit should mean longer gaming sessions without any annoyance, which along with the need for a microphone, are my main reasons at actually looking for a decent set

Yeah the Sirus is extremely comfortable, I have mine on for most of the day.
