So I have a charger gone bad.
Turns out many of there have a problem at either end of the thin cable.
Fraying occurs at either the point where the cable leaves the charger at the grommet or where it goes in to Mag Safe connector itself.
This has caused all sorts of problems to multitudes of users, so much so, that a class action lawsuit was filed against Apple.
Apple settled the lawsuit by offering a recall.
However, this is applicable to Apple customers in the USA ONLY.
So while acknowledging there is a problem, Apple was clearly only concerned about potential lawsuits in the USA.
in other parts of the world where there has not been a lawsuit, seems Apple don't really give a toss !
And of course, these recalls are done in stealth mode.
There was a battery recall some time back. Most people were unaware of it - especially in SA.
There was a logic board recall on MBP's that had the NVIDIA GeForce 8600M display adaptor - also very quiet !
There have been many others.
When setting up you Apple device, Apple always request customer's email details "to keep customers updated" etc.
In the 10yrs or so of using various Apple devices, I have yet to receive any notification of a recall effecting the products I own !!
I have usually found out about most recalls (by accident) after the program has ended.
A little rude I think.
Here are the details of the Power Supply recall / exchange program:
