Amazon unveils futuristic drone delivery plan

Want that Amazon order in just 30 minutes? Company CEO Jeff Bezos says he hopes to soon deploy an armada of mini-drones able to drop small packages at your doorstep.

The US online retail giant's revolutionary project still needs extra safety testing and federal approval, but Bezos believes that Amazon "Prime Air" would be up and running within four to five years.

"These are effectively drones but there's no reason that they can't be used as delivery vehicles," Bezos told CBS television's "60 Minutes" program late Sunday.

"I know this looks like science fiction. It's not," he said.

"We can do half-hour delivery . . . and we can carry objects, we think, up to five pounds (2.3 kilograms), which covers 86 percent of the items that we deliver."

A video posted on the company's website shows a prototype drone. The body of the device is about the size of a flat-scree monitor, and it is attached to eight small helicopter rotors and sits on four tall legs.

The claws under the belly of the "octopeter" then latch onto a standard sized plastic bucket that rolls down a conveyer belt at Amazon's fulfillment center. Inside the bucket is the order.

The drone lifts off and whizzes into the air like a giant mechanical insect to deliver the package just 30 minutes after clicking the "pay" button on Amazon.com. Then it buzzes back into the air and returns to base.

The mini-drones are powered by environmentally-friendly electric motors and can cover areas within a 10-mile (16-kilometer) radius of fulfillment centers, thus covering a significant portion of the population in urban areas.

The drones operate autonomously and follow the GPS coordinates they receive to drop the items off the target locations.

"It's very green, it's better than driving trucks around," said Bezos.

He also claims they are safe; the prototype has redundant motors that will keep it in the air and prevent it from crashing.

"The hard part here is putting in all the redundancy, all the reliability, all the systems you need to say, 'Look, this thing can't land on somebody's head while they're walking around their neighborhood,'" Bezos told CBS.

Amazon said the octocopters would be "ready to enter commercial operations as soon as the necessary regulations are in place," noting that the Federal Aviation Administration was hard at work hammering out rules for the use of unmanned aerial vehicles.

Amazon projected a more optimistic timeline than Bezos himself for the project to be activated, saying the FAA's rules could be in place as early as 2015, and that Amazon Prime Air would be ready at that time.

Bezos hinted that part of the motivation behind the mini-drones was to make sure Amazon remains on the cutting edge of the retail industry.

"Companies have short life spans... And Amazon will be disrupted one day," he said.

"I would love for it to be after I'm dead."

If the plan succeeds other retailers like Wal Mart, or even the local pizza store, could also start home deliveries via drone.

Comments on Twitter about the program ranged from amazed to humorous.

"If this weren't on the CBS website, I would think this Amazon drone thing was an Onion article," wrote Iris Blasi, referring to the popular satirical tabloid.

One day drones will be "delivering" humans and all this nonsense about self-driving cars and e-tolls will be irrelevant. That is what I think. Granted I'm not sure what it would take to lift 100kg payload. Anyone know?

Hell the RPM a battery motor surely can achieve should be good enough for a decent rotor lift? Carbon fiber frame? Added VTOL motors or jetpack technology? Surely someone can think up of something?

Not exactly, taking restricted airspace in consideration.

I believe they already tested an AI Sky Crane Helicopter.

DRONENET The next BIG thing.

Here's the next BIG thing. Something that has the potential to be as big as the Internet.

It's one of those ideas that hits you like a ton of bricks once you figure it out.

Given the rise in the entrepreneurial backchatter I'm getting on it, I supect it's going to roll out very quickly.

More quickly than most people think once it gets going, since most of the infrastructure required to put it into motion is already in place.

What is it?

It's an Internet of drones.

A short distance drone delivery service built on an open protocol. Think short haul logistics.

It's a system that will explode in a way that is very similar to the way the Internet grew up -- where connections were bought by individuals and installed one modem and IP address at a time, and where the early providers are local geeks with shelves full of modems and an expensive T-1 lines.

It's an approach that uses "uncontrolled airspace" and incremental purchases of cheap, standards compliant pads/drones to roll itself out (very similar to the way the Internet was able to piggy back on the old telephone system).

As a result of this open approach and decentralization, it's something that could grow VERY fast.


Here's a simplified version of what I'm talking about:
1.I put package onto a landing pad at my home.
2.Drone arrives, takes package and flies away.
3.Drone delivers package to landing pad at delivery location.

There's almost nothing technically in the way of this happening right now.

Here's how it would work in practice:
•My brother left his iphone at my house. I want to get it to him, but he lives 30 mi away (as the crow flies, 50 by driving).
•I put it into a delivery container and put it on a small landing pad outside my home.
•I order a drone on my phone and put the ID of the container into the order (I could just as easily use a drone I buy to do it P2P).
•A drone arrives 10 minutes later, picks up the container automatically.
•After a couple of hops, it arrives at my brother's landing pad, where it drops off the container and alerts him with an e-mail/text.
•Costs? Probably less than $0.25 per 10 mi. or so. So, about $0.75 in this instance. Time? An hour or so.


How cool is that? Now add millions of drones and millions of landing pads, interconnecting with each other according to simple rules and decentralized ownership.

There's lots more to this, and I'll try to share it when I get a chance.

Well we already have drones with sophisticated collision avoidance and ability to keep itself upright (I'm sure I've seen videos of this), and I'm thinking that it is far easier to navigate the air than all the obstacles and nuances on the road no? :)

Plus I think some guys have already mapped out highways in the air in some developed cities, also saw a documentary where this was shown. Future cars I think it was.

Dropping an order off at the front door is fine and dandy. Eminently doable.

But the package would get harvested by the barbarians within seconds of the drone drop-off. Probably hijack the drone as well.

(It's still amazing to me that in ornery suburbia in most of the USA, delivery companies drop stuff off at people's front doors. No walls. No fences. Just open properties. And it stays there until the people come home.)

Might just require that you build a landing pad of some sorts in your back yard - guessing landing pads will have their own unique ID's and it will be that GPS coordinates that the drone will fly to. So put it where the bad guys can't get to it.

They can just do something like the Oppikoppie beer delivery where it uses your cellphone satellite with an app button that you press for drop off. Obviously may just need some refining :)

The M400 Skycar people figured it out (http://moller.com/dev/index.php/about-us/faq#4.8). They gave you a mile wide block to move in with good GPS systems to prevent collisions (not to mention the awesome strides Google made with self driving cars). There is enough airspace above us. Also everybody follows the rules like planes do: One direction is at an odd numbered altitude, other direction at an even numbered altitude.

Collision avoidance mechanisms are an on-going research and development program, should it be ground, naval or air units. This may be sophisticated, but very much limited to the general consumer. How will uncontrolled units behave towards controlled units in an open environment, example: Piloted helicopter crashing into an automated drone, vice versa? So many more scenarios...

Even highways in the air will have risk conditions, TRAFFIC will never be avoidable and anyone can dispute this, even air contains various obstacles. Security will always be a risk under these circumstances.
