I've been looking at replacing my bed linen, specifically with something 100% cotton.

So far I've managed to find 100% cotton duvet cover sets at:

- Edgars (really overpriced)
- Mr Price Home (Incredibly limited range)
- Woolworths (as above)

SheetStreet had an awesome selection, however it seems that their complete range is polycotton (50% polyester, 50% cotton I assume).

I'm sure I'm forgetting another place I've looked at, but I'm wondering if anyone else has managed to find something decent?

After all this, I now know that cotton is not spelled "cotten" :P

Look for percale linen and make sure its 100% cotton. Last time I checked Woolies only had the 50:50 cotton : polyester mix and their staff are convinced that is all you get. It also goes by the name of Egyptian Cotton and must be over 250 count (200 is the min). These sheets feel like sleeping on silk.

Also a cotton mattress protector (they are all cotton) from a bedding store is a must.

Look at smaller stores and ask bedding shops.

Hmmm interesting. I'll definitely go for the mattress protector. I usually use a random blanket I had lying around.

Yeah, after all these years of using cheap bed linen, I figured it was time for a change.

The following stores is definitely pricey but you will find exactly what you want:

Loads Of Living
At Home

In the Western Cape, we have Kolnicks; they're a factory shop and they sell linen at a discount - got R1400 worth of linen from them and that included sheets (fitted and flat), mattress protectors, pillow protectors, and pillow cases.

I'm in Durban, but thanks anyway :P

I'll have a look at what Loads of Living have to offer - I see there is a branch at Gateway.

Volpes is a long established PE company with an online store. They've got a wide range but I haven't used the online facility as we always visit the shop:

Thanks guys, I remember coming across their website once before, but something about it put me off. Will browse around after work and see what I can find.

kolnicks has this Egyptian stuff? I thought they were on the mass production stuff only.

I just asked our home fashion buyer and she says good luck :p she suggested Woolies :)

I find it odd that cotton percale is such a mission to find, and that polycotton is so widespread. Anyway...

LOL, thanks. There is a lot out there. I searched Galleria in Amanzimtoti two weekends ago, and Pavilion a week or so before, and found stuff like the Hotel Collection mentioned below.

Not Egyptian cotton but they have cotton percale. They also have the Hotel Collection - same linen as used in hotels; pure cotton.

What really grates me is the lack of variety. Seems I can only find "pretty" sets, or white.

It's been an ongoing search...

Try this: Buy white bed linen and buy patterned bedcovers (duvets, quilts etc)

I too don't like the "pretty" sets because it's mostly floral designs. Look for something simple, with a stripe or some band at the foot end of the duvet.

I sometimes get ours custom made in Cape Town by Harper, actually cheaper and better quality. You need to go custom with modern mattresses (well anything bought this century) due to the depth of the mattress.

And for some unknown reason, South African stores still think people must sleep on standard length (188cm) mattresses. I even remember 10 years back having a head manager of Woolies get me to arrange bedding for him as Woolied only stocked standard length back then.

That was my plan. Unfortunately the bulk of the patterned designs are usually polycotton and not cotton percale :/

I'm requoting here :P

I spent a bit of time looking at Velopes again. I remember my problem. They have cheaper cotton percale sets in three light colours (white, charcoal and a brown), but the count is 200.

The only thing after that is the "pretty" stuff with a count of 300, and it seems with the prettiness comes great expense :P

I found a nice solid colour collection at Mr Price Home (in Hillcrest). Didn't have any weird patterns on which made me happy.

The duvet set was 100% cotton with a thread count of 300, for R559. Went with that for now :)

If you ever in these regions try www.whsa.co.za incredibly well priced linen. Excellent quality. Generally Woolies offers the best quality linen.

Stay away from Mr Price and Sheet Street absolute crap.

Reason?

While most of their stuff is polycotton, what I got from MRP Home is boss. The sort of quality that one would find at Woolies / Edgars / @Home. Note that I steered clear from that polycotton crap.

The price was cheaper, but the quality is on par with the Hotel Collection brands.

Edit: That website you referenced is boss! Might still buy something from them :P
