This is sort of a spin-off from this thread - I was reading all the posts and came across someone mentioning that they're on Keto. I've also heard quite a lot about this diet from a good friend of mine and there are plenty resources around discussing this topic, some of which I've read.

For those of you who aren't familiar with what I'm on about, there is an awesome sub-reddit here which explains it nicely:

Here's the TL;DR of keto:
Eat: meat (fish, beef, pork, poultry), eggs, high fat dairy, leafy greens, broccoli, cauliflower etc., avacado, nuts, seeds, berries
Don't Eat: grains (including rice and corn), sugar (including fructose), starches (most root veggies).
If you're unsure, look it up and use some method to track what you eat
If your goal is weight loss, carbs will be counter productive in the long run. What you eat is up to you, we can't stop you. Through 2 years of being here, the most success has come from those who have stuck with it and not allowed cheats.

On (interwebs) paper, there are clear benefits. But ideally, I'd like to hear from those who are on a diet (this one or any other) what they think, and their suggestions.

Well, yes. It's the healthiest lifestyle out there for the vast majority of the population. Not sure what else you want to know.

Have any specific questions?

Yeah - how do people on this diet not have any cholesterol issues?

I don't want to make myself more unhealthy than I already am :P

Because cholesterol isn't the bad ogre people have accused it of being. Nor do fats contribute towards poor cholesterol (most fats, at least).

I suggest you read Peter Attia's stuff (he's a cardiologist) - http://eatingacademy.com/

You will find absolutely everything you need to know about keto, carbs, and cardiovascular disease for beginners there, in incredible details, including all of the science, and in a manner that is understandable...

Also watch the documentary Fat Head (well, the second half of it at least) for more basic info:

Aah shot! Much appreciated :)

Will watch that over the weekend, and read the blog in between work tomorrow.

I started doing Keto 2 weeks ago and already lost 10kgs. The first 2 days were the worst, but after that its smooth sailing so far. I never go hungry ever, I have so much more energy as well. I also got those ketone sticks to pee on to see if i'm on the right path.

10Kg's in 2 weeks, that is certainly not healthy.

Nutritional ketosis is how our bodies are designed to function. Also read Cholesterol Clarity if you're concerned about cholesterol. Basically though you want high total cholesterol, high HDL, high LDL pattern A, low pattern B LDL and low triglycerides. People with this profile live the longest.

Depending on your current weight 3-4kg of that is water weight (glycogen)

Been on Keto for long, best for dieting, worst for bodybuilding, you cant beat the benefits of glycogen and creatine unfortunately, but now I am still on low carb.

I think the only reason why people would be sceptical of this diet is because of the misconception people have about fat. Some people believe that eating fat makes you fat which is simply not the case. While I can see the benefits of Keto for rapid weight lost I'm leaning towards a paleo diet in the long run for a healthier lifestyle. The main difference between paleo and keto being paleo is everything but grains whereas keto requires you to give up more than just grains.
