So I've upgraded my line to a 20mbps vdsl line (400m to far from the exchange for the 40mb :( ) and got my zyxel SBG3300 router but I am battling to get it connected to internet.

I can see it is syncing at 20mb on vdsl but I can't get it connecting to the internet using my Afrihost details and I'm not really sure why. Not sure if I am missing something, but I've set it up using PTM mode using PPPOE Encapsulation.

Did anyone have similar issues?

having something very similar (on the cheaper ZyXEL) and will let you know if i sort it out

i am syncing at 40mbps, and everything is cool if i use the guest1@telkomadsl test account
but switching to my proper afrihost account then it does not connect

What is the 802.1P and 802.1Q set to on the router? Maybe send us a screenshot or list with details of your setup...

Good day,

I hope you are well!;)

Please can you send us a bit more info in regards to your current setup configuration. Some of the default settings on these routers might have to be changed for it to work correctly here in South Africa. Please also include your firmware version.

Kind regards
ZyXEL support team

okay so i went and bought a pace router at telkom and everything works. hopefully i can get my money back for the ZyXEL

Hey,

802.1P must be 0
802.1Q must be 835

VLAN must be enabled

You sir deserve a case of beer! That was all I needed to make it work thanks! Kind of frustrating since I spoke to two different people at afrihost who told me not to put anything into those fields and insisted my router was busted.

Sorry to resurrect a thread and then hijack it - I ordered VDSL 20mbps after being told it was available yesterday. Went out and got the Zyxel modem (VMG1312-B10A)

About half an hour ago I checked the line stats, and saw the modem was now syncing at 20mbps. However, it doesn't seem to be on VDSL:

ADSL Training Status: Showtime
Mode: ADSL2+ Annex A
Traffic Type: ATM Mode
Link Uptime: 0 day: 0 hour: 17 minutes

Is there anything I should change on the modem to make it go into VDSL mode instead of ADSL2? Or is it still mid-upgrade and I should just wait?

Looks like mid-upgrade. You need to let Telkom know you have a VDSL capable modem plugged in, and that they can switch your port over to VDSL profile instead of ADSL profile.

The other way you will know you on ADSL2 instead of VDSL, you upload speed will be limited to 1Mbps on ADSL2+ where as on VDSL telkom let upload speed go to 2Mbps for 20Mbps VDSL.

ps. Lovely VDSL router you got there, I have one on a ADSL line and it works perfect.

Shouldn't they switch the port over automatically? They didn't mention anything about calling them to complete the upgrade? Who do I need to call, 10210?

I have no idea who you need to call, but it definitely won't happen automatically. I don't personally have VDSL, but every case I have seen thus far, and I know it was mentioned by Telkom that when you order the ADSL line will go to 20Mbps immediatly, but you must inform them that you have a VDSL capable router plugged into then they switch you over.
You probably need to call the Telkom callcenter if you have your line via Telkom or your ISP if you have it through an ISP.

Hmm, that's rather vital information for them to leave out. Let me try and find out who on earth I'm supposed to speak to - thanks.

Hilarious. Called 10210, selected the option to check on an existing order. Woman told me she couldn't help me, would transfer me to tech support. Transferred, spent 40 mins on hold, got through to someone. Told her the issue - was told she can "upgrade me to ADSL". Asked what she was talking about, as I was meant to be switched over to a VDSL profile. She starts doing something her side, then a minute later, tells me she's having a problem with her system, she's going to transfer me to someone else who can help me.

Guess who's sitting on hold now.. Oh Telkom, you're so lucky you have no competition.

So 40 minutes later - Telkom are telling me if I'm syncing at 20mbps, I'm on VDSL. If the modem is telling me different, they're not sure what I'm supposed to change on it because it's not the official Telkom modem so they don't know the settings.

Anyone with experience with this modem (same one as the title of the thread) can you tell me if/what you changed? There are two WAN interfaces set up under Broadband:

I thought this was just the connection info - but does one have to be disabled and one enabled when the modem negotiates the connection, or is it irrelevant until it's time to actually authenticate?

This ZyXEL has both ADSL and VDSL enabled by default, as you can see in your screenshot. The only way you can maybe force VDSL mode is by deleting the ADSL WAN interface, but then if VDSL is not enabled on your port...well guess what? You will have 0 connectivity.

I am fairly certain, 99% at least, it is a setting change on Telkom's side. The problem is, it is Friday afternoon, all the guys that actually know what to do, probably already left for the weekend.
