I'm almost done setting up my Ubuntu HP N54L NAS server at home and want to add a HTPC.

My original idea was to get a pair of Pi's because of the low power usage and size but then I had read that they don't play all formats and all HD content. Couple this with the price of R1k per Pi and it is not very attractive i.e. wifi adapter, Pi version B with SD card and case.

My next option is to get a base model Nuc for the same price which is alot more powerful (I've got some parts already). The Zotac Nano and Gigabyte Brix might be a better option but I don't see anyone selling them.

What are your opinions about what I should do?

If you can go for a NUC for that price, that is the clear winner IMO.

It's the Celeron Nuc for 2.3k at Rebeltech. My budget is 2k. The Nuc is not that much bigger than the Pi.

Have you looked at the androidTV and AppleTV ?

The are a little more than 1k but will outpower the Pi. Also comes kitted out.

The PI does not cost 1k though.
Pay less than R500 or you are being robbed.

Raspberry Pi R449.99+Edimax wireless adapter R201.75+Samsung 8gb R144.03+Type B case R70.38=R866.15+Vat=R987.41 Total

I was thinking of buying two of these. One for XBMC/Openelec and the other for some Squeezebox player. However if I get a Nuc, Brix or Nano then I can combine these two device needs into one.

Has the Brix and Zotac Nano not made it to SA as yet?

You forgot to add the USB charger.

I've got spare 5v 0.7 amp Samsung phone chargers lying around so that isn't a problem. I would have to pay to use certain codecs which doesn't bode well.

My NUC kicks ass, not a hiccup running XBMC on OpenElec. Cost me R5k+ though to setup.

I'm aiming for the Celeron nuc. I've got a 2 gig dimm already and I've read of a guy running Openelec from a flash stick. I would just need to buy the wifi card which is cheap.

If you're going to be streaming HD wirelessly through rooms I would check the signal first. You might end up having to run cable and if that's the case then not having an RJ45 connection on your device could be a deal breaker.

It does. The "I" models are missing that.
