Right...

A friend of mine bought a place a year or two ago, he bought it with a high gain antenna and a white box attached to a wall on the outside of the flat. I always assumed he was using it, until I asked him about it. :)

It turns out he doesn't even know what it was so I made a joke about him passing it on to me as I pondered with an idea a few months ago, but never got very far.

So he told he I can take it off as, in his opinion, its unsightly. So I went there after work yesterday, and just out of curiosity opened up the white box, and to my surprise the routerboard 411 with expansion card was inside.

Unfortunately the only cable which was attached to it was the cable to the big ass antenna.

I haven't even tested whether its working yet, but if it does, I'd love for you guys to give me some advice in implementing the idea I linked to above.

There are lots of guides and helpful people available on the Mikrotik forums. It will also be worth your time attending a MTCNA course.

Rather use it to join CTWUG and learn a bit more about Wi-Fi before you even start thinking about starting your own "Wisp".

Also that board probably came with a L3 license so you wont be able to use it as an AP (only point-to-point) and for the price of an L4 lic you might as well buy a new router.

Yeah, thanks.

First point of call would be to mount the antenna on a long pole against the house and then start fiddling with the user guides, etc.

My idea is to have make all educational sites (I can think of) accessible free of charge. Then use a voucher system for accessing other sites. haven't thought the voucher way through yet, but perhaps I'll have a bunch of codes generated, printed and then have the supermarket around the corner from me sell them with a 10% markup. Still need to sleep over this.

edit:note to self: learn to refresh when you come back from a smoke break :p

Bellville has great CTWUG coverage.
Problem is I don't stay in Bellville, only work here :)

I'll look into that. Thanks

:( OK.

I'd still have some use for it though as I can then connect to a buddy of mine a couple of streets away for some LAN gaming :)
